The Death of Oink

Oink is no more.

I don't know how many of you all used the pink pig, but its death is huge for me. I downloaded unholy amounts of music from there, and certainly bought all kinds of records, CDs, and even occasionally MP3s based on what I found there. For me, Oink (along with Dissensus really) was instrumental in massively expanding the boundaries of the types of music I sought out. It really was a huge community of music fans, and its death will be mourned. dj/rupture, who was shocked to find so much of his stuff there, has a good piece on the whole thing.

uk subs weren't oink (ok really splitting hairs now, 57 million varieties and all that). even stuff like the exploited doesn't really count as oink.

Fuck, I just got on to this a couple months ago and I never exploited it like I should have. Rupture stuff was some of the first releases I upped! I was going for Power User hard core these past weeks... aarrgh!

yeah, but soulseek sorta sucks souls. rupture:

Aside: One thing I don’t understand is how Oink got taken down while Soulseek continues as it has for years… Slsk has always struck me as the least moral of the p2p systems. Last I knew, if you pay Soulseek $5 a month, you get ‘privileged download access‘ to files stored on Slsk users hard drives. Soulseek earns money by controlling access to the files stored on its users’ drives, users who never see any of this money. And if they don’t like the fact that paying people get special access to their data, there’s nothing they can do about it. Even if you don’t pay Soulseek the money fee, if you use the service and share some music on your hard-drive, you are probably earning Soulseek cash. This strikes me as really wrong. Whatever happened to honor among thieves?

I wonder how 'lucrative' that scheme is for the slsk operators though really? Obviously there are costs involved in running the system and then there's the risk as well... Rupture does have a point but I always thought it was a fairly reasonable way to run things - you're getting stuff for free, if you want it a bit faster then pay for the upkeep of the service.

considering the evolution of p2p etc I'm not too worried about this. As long as I have slsk as a permanent backup I'll be ready for whatever new service pops up

At least the RIAA doesn't have your information in a nicely wrapped package!
I'm happy I don't live in the US.

the news coverage on this has been fucked

the bbc article was calling it "extremely lucrative" for the owners, when there's no advertising or membership fee, and claiming users paid to download...

yeah, the coverage is really pissing me off. you used to be able to donate a little $ to keep the site going, but I doubt that was ever a money making scheme. I'd wager a site with 180 000 members would need to find some way of paying for itself!

"A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site's users"

wonder if they'll prosecute all 180,000 of us

I actually used to feel quite proud when I'd see releases related to my activities on oink

Nice to see they are pouring manpower into the hardcore online crimes, rather than shutting down those kiddie porn rings or credit card fraudsters.

especially since (I know how lame this sounds), something like OiNK might well have been a net increaser in overall music sales.

When will these 'industry' people ever learn?

They shat themselves over cassettes, they shat themselves over VHS and they shat themselves over mp3. And every time when they eventually realise that they can work with the new models rather trying vainly to fight them, the profits are there for the making. If you're going to be capitalists at least do it properly!

FILESHARING IS KILLING MUSIC!!! :D

One of these days someone really will kill music, and then we'll all be sorry. :(:(:(

You're right, it does seem strange that the people clever enough to be making billions from recorded media aren't clever enough to find ways of expoiting new forms of media rather than frantically trying to have them made illegal or otherwise shut down.
