My grandfather was a Shriner in Texas.. He played trombone in a Shriner dixieland jazz band and traveled all over the world to play at conventions.. I used to p lay with the stickers he put on his luggage, which had a scimitar and a fez on them. He did have his own fez as well.
He died when I was pretty seven. But I do remember him explaining to my Dad that Catholics could never be shriners because there are secrets the shriners have, and a Catholic could be compelled to tell his secrets to a priest.
They are big into philanthropy and fund hospitals
I don't think Jews fitted into the equation anywhere, even in exclusion. And I don't know about black folk or latino folk - I never saw any as part of his band or in pictures of shriners. But my Dad could have been one, if he hadn't been a goddam longhaired beatnik
