on the projector at the club.

not baraka... i've seen that a few times too many at parties.

go ahead and list the tech/geeky stuff but I'm not looking for that kinda vibe at the mo.

looking for films or videos with lots of rhythm and boogie. any movies with loads of freaky dancing? or just fun to look at while dancing (eon flux type shit is cool i guess)

a 6 hour edit of best bits of Soul-Train would be great...

or 6 hour edit of best bits of Bollywood dancing.

or african tribal ceremonies would be IDEAL.

any ideas? thanks in advance...

What about The Divine Horsemen?

yes! thanks for the tip! i think i heard of it long time ago but never got a chance to check it out.

this kind of early ethonological films is great for what i have in mind.

and someone just recommended this, just the raddest shit ever:

Sick Boy

All about pride and egos
Once we brought DJ Assault into this club and found out the club had a projector so rented out this Booty Competition DVD to play on the wall real big.

Only thing is once we started playing it we realized it was a little on the porno end of booty competitions...

... but we'd come too far at that point. :)

Zhao, do you mix your nights on a tempo basis? ie when you and your mate are DJing, does the night start at 90 and go to 180 or whatever? Cos if you give me a rough idea of tempo if there is one - obviously I understand if there isn't, I don't think I could mix like that - then I can do you a miniDV of tempo mixed visuals. I probably get more jobs - real jobs lol - as a VJ than anything else. You can see examples on the Patricide site of stuff I do with another guy Aryan, not that I would imagine doing stuff like that for your night.

Have to be on miniDv though cos I havent got the computer power to burn an hours worth of material.

preppy-kei
Went to an electro night in Manchester ages ago where they played a DVD of clips from 80s porn flicks with all the actual sex edited out, so it was just lots of people with bad perms sleeveless tees and wraparound shades talking by the pool or on big cubic couches or whatever. Sort of worked, though.

yeah i don't know about that one, a lot of what you say comes awfully close to tastelessy exoticising the other in a rather crude way ...

aMindada, i can see how it might appear that way.

but what the fuck. I'm asking for ideas of cool DVD's to play.

at the end of the day i don't want to waste too much time on the internet and so say thing briefly sometimes without explanation. if that comes off wrong to you, i admire your sensitivity to these issues -- but do not judge me because you have no idea about my relationship to the "otherness" you think I'm exoticizing, and you have no idea who I am, what i do, how i live my life.

thanks for the heads up though. i'll try to be more conscious of the effects of my words.

That whole rap about 'exoticising the other' is so tired. The 'other', if there is such a thing, is always exotic. If it wasn't it wouldn't be 'the other' ffs. ;)

Maybe the real question is, is there such a thing as an 'other' in the first place.

It works the other way, too. I have it on good authority that Africans attending tribal ceremonies like nothing better to watch than videos of Fawlty Towers, and gawp at the sheer alien Otherness of it.

When I saw 2562 on friday, they had Castle of Cagliostro playing in the bar area, it was quite good fun trying to figure out what the hell was going on without the sound. Maybe manga, kung fu and kids TV are a bit declasse for what you're after, but they'd all work. Oh, or get some really ace wildlife stuff like David Attenborough's Blue Planet.

I think, weirdly and unfortunately, that it's more likely to be Lethal Weapon 2 and 3. They're on like every two hours in South Africa it seems. And Jewel Of The Nile. That sort of glossy Eighties film thing, if you're looking for the authentic South African vibe Zhao you should def show them.

well for people that have never left the block on which they were born and are under-exposed to information about cultures other than their own, sure there is an "other".

but for most of us, me for instance who grew up on 2 different continents now living on a 3rd... i'm not exoticizing anything as much as just maybe facilitating exchange. i'm an ambassador. ambassador of funk. :)
