does anyone know what the cheapest way of transfering money from a uk bank account to a US account?

somebody recomended western union but having lookied into this they charge an extortunate 20%.

i was thinking paypal may be the way forward as it may be be free to except / withdraw cash from a US bank account. is this right?

If you both are non-business members, Paypal is free. At least that's been true for me in the US.

There is a limit on how much you can transfer. Also I would check the exchange rate. But I'm pretty sure they don't charge anything extra.

Use hifx or similar.

They take about 3 ticks off the traded FX rate (though it gets smaller with size) - you transfer to them, and they will Swift it to your bank account.

You need bank accounts in both places though.
