so come on then , allow me just to jump in and just ask someone to just recommend me the best dubstep shit around for someone who has listened to basically none of it but wants to hear all of the definitive records from the past 5 years...

or at least a link somewhere to a good rundown of all the goods..

you know i was in russia last year and my choice before heading to india was either going to london and crashing dubstep parties or going to berlin and going for minimal

of course i ended up in berlin, and what a story that turned out to be....!

so yeah, give me something

and forgive me for my ignorance, oh venerable nerddom

starting with Tempa's Dubstep Allstars series is probably a good idea (and their Roots of Dubstep too).

Volume 6 mixed by Appleblim has just come out and pushed things in a very sexy new direction.

Talking about Applemblim- Skull Disco's Soundboy Punishments comp is a truly excellent archive of that label's leftfield and unique approach to the genre.

Every single on Hyperdub, every single one, are also things of wonder to behold.

village elder.
the entire hyperdub, tempa, deep medi and dmz back catalogue...

also hessle, punch drunk, 2nd drop for newer labels.

but yeah the first batch of dubstep allstars cds are probably the best place to start.

download oneman and scientist sets for history lessons!

I rate this mix from mid '05 by DST (dubway?) as a good intro and a bit of a history lesson. Documents that period where dubstep is really coming into it's own.

Grievous Angel, nomos and Blackdown have some excellent mixes that line up and contextualise lots of 'definitive' tunes. I'm sure they can provide links. Others who post here, UFO over easy, elgato (sorry if I miss anyone) also rinsing and flexing from week to week. ;)

Also if you haven't heard the Dubstep Warz sets from Mary Anne Hobbs' show you should as it was really a pivotal moment. I have an edited version with none of the chat that I'll try and upload.

Second all of the above, but I wouldn't bother with Dubstep allstars Vol 4 cos its really boring. The new one's great though.

I sort of agree with everything above, but if you can't go to clubs I think the best way to exprience the music is through records, so, get:

anything at all on the DMZ label (you should be able to get a hold of #'s 3-13)
the three 2562 12"s on the Tectonic label, and similarly all of Martyn's dubstep releases to date, especially the new one on Applepips. This stuff is more on the techno/dubstep tip
Kode 9's and Burial's releases on Hyperdub
the last couple Shackleton releases on Skull Disco: 'Tin Foil Sky', 'Hamas Rule', 'You Bring Me Down', and 'Death Is Not Final' are all excellent

Mixes are great for disseminating the music, but even on CDs the sound quality isn't as good as on vinyl, and downloaded mixes (or songs/CDs/etc) don't even come close to nice sound.

In return, tell us about what's happening in Berlin minimal?

Also, for the heads - a year ago I would have included Tempa in the above list, but something's happened to their quality control. I love everything up the Trial Run ep or so, but now it's just this SP:MC wobble and some Skream wobble and some more Benga wobble over here... similarly, Youngsta's sets are full of tunes by drum and bass producers with bad drops and bad samples and boring drumbeats (except for Breakage) - why has this happened?

Hey this is fuckin awesome, thanks guys im pretty well on my way to getting nicely aquanted now, cheers!

But yeah, berlin minimal, jeesh i dunno it was a pretty decadent and hedonistic time, but pretty much the obvious we already know. Why isnt there a 'Minimal - breaking news..etc'
thread here, i figure it is just as amazing thing right now..

but yeah, i have been in India for 6 months in the mountains living with villagers and sadhus and what not and only got back a week ago so its all new to me now! But i would like to get quickly reemerged. The obvious Ricardo Villalobos, Thomas Melchior records, Substatic, Freak'n'chic, etc etc..

I pretty much am at the moment relying on our friend Phillip Sherburne http://www.philipsherburne.com/ to let me know whats going on, anyone got any other sources that aid as appropriate step-down transformers for the sporadic outlet of this music?

You guys should check out Dissensus.com too, they know where its at! ;)
