I have this. The riff in Wiley's remix always makes me think of Cartrouble Part 1 by Adam And The Ants ("I dreamt I was a spastic but my boots were clean"), but that's probably just me.

Was that the first Grime / 8bar remix of a major US hip-hop single? It's not all that exciting but I remember talk about how it meant US heads were taking notice, like it matters, and it would all kick off from there, or something.

miaow. you can't post 200 music videos and then complain because someone hasn't checked to see if it's already been posted.

this one deserves posting at least four times, the mournful strings in combination with that sadly-anthemic, emotive hook is just sublime:

it's obvious from looking at this just how total the south's dominance has been. its quite formidable. this is in no way an idiosyncratic list. it's just hits. westwood, mtv base, a little deja and 1xtra, a little chanell u. its all the south plus a few big producers. just blaze, heatmakers, kayne, lil jon, the neptunes, timbo.... the MCs are largely interchangable.
my real love is energy music. from when i first got passionate about music, when i was a kid listening to pulse 90.6 and weekend rush and later kool fm and then magic and deja and rinse, dancehall, grime, jungle, and this stuff fits into that perfectly. i love hypeness and power and energy. thats what does it for me.

nb. you know drilla i got a playlist that has this stuff, plus the other youtube thread i got obsessed with, plus hardcore/jungle, plus elephant man, plus grime instrumentals and it gets me so overexcited its not true.

before the year 2000 the tones was already set. you'd had songs like money, cash, hoes, superthug, banned from tv, ruff ryders anthem, ha, u understand.....
that hypenesss was there, that manic club energy was already established...
in that sense its alomst been a quite homogenous decade, theres a unity of sound in a way, whereas theres defineite breakpoints in the 90s. the g-funk thing, but also on the east that palpable fattening of sound that happeened around 94, then of course the big changes with BIG and badboy and then leading into the ditching of sampling that set the tone for the 00s....
since i had to come and stay in sydney though i havent been keeping up becuase austrlalians hate black music s im missing the developments drilla was pointing too in his 00s pop thread... would someone care to elaborate? or point to any other breaks i've missed?
maybe the crunk thing? and the influence of the other southern scenes... probably generalising too much too throw that all in with the timbalnad/swizz/neptunes thing.... i just think they laid the ground for its acceptance.... pulling hiphop away from samping which had run its course whatever tweaks premier etc were making to the formula.

I like it, the first 10 tracks anyway.

I personally thought the album was kind of an embarrassment both sonically and lyrically. So much so that none of the other members of the Wu dared to guest appear on it. The other Wu Elements (Allah Mathematics, Bronze Nazareth, Cilvarings, True Master, 4th Disciple, etc.) are more in demand production wise than RZA is right now.

If he's doing a score or a soundtrack, he's fine. As far as leaving him to his own devices and not giving him a project to focus on with some boundaries his material ends up being crap.

Lil Wayne- I don't really get it. I've listened to some tunes on youtube and although one or two are good, is he REALLY being hailed as the best rapper in the world?

I'm not so much anti the idea as bemused by it. Someone explain please why he's better than Ghostface.

I think it takes a while for it to sink in why he's so good. He's just so strange, he comes out with so much weird stuff that totally makes you laugh. The voice gets you after a while too i think. Download last year's free mixtape, da drought 3, and listen to that. I got hooked on him after I'd listened to that.

In terms of current relevancy, and mostly the kind of artist that Lil Wayne is, regardless of the genre he operates in, and how his mode of expression is so suited to the format of the current music industry in a way industry heads don't even really understand (hence, why they can't figure out how he's selling so many records), I'd say that Lil Wayne is pretty much better than any of those you listed. Specifically right NOW, of course.

That being said, I respect your particular taste for hip hop, and admire the depth of your passion for it, so it makes me feel kind of stupid saying shit like that, but almost all of those dudes you listed's careers peaked ages ago.

This review (http://www.salon.com/ent/music/review/2008/06/19/lil_wayne/) seems to have helped me understand a bit more- it's his eccentricity, isn't it? Has anyone got a comp/mix of the best of Lil Wayne though, since apparently his albums/mixtapes are hit and miss?

sodiumnightlife
08-07-2008, 10:48 AM
For me da drought 3 was pretty much all hit, but yeah carter 3, the album that just came out, is definitely pretty patchy.

I don't even think its right to compare nas to little wayne, they both operate in hugely different territories. I think one thing that stands Lil Wayne apart from everyone else is that where they're all about reality, his life has never been anything but unreal. What age did he get signed at, like 9? It doesn't surprise me that the man is a drug addict with a totally warped view of things, I know i'd be if i'd spent my formative years on the road.

His metaphors are like no one elses, totally surrealistic without being try hard, and his rhythms are amazing, the man has a sense of timing that is all his own.

I don't care about the "hotness" or relevancy argument. I can't argue that Lil' Wayne is far and away the most popular Hip Hop artist on the planet right now. I'm talking about his statement that he is the "Greatest Rapper Alive" (a claim he stole from Jay-Z, mind you!). After he said that I was like "Oh, really?". He get eaten alive by about 100 dudes I could name off the top of my head that no one on these boards have ever heard of and a gang more that actually have recognizable names.

All I'm saying is if you make a claim, you better be able to live up to it. Hottest in the game? I wouldn't try to dispute it. Greatest alive or best alive? FOH!

D'yer think so? Aside from the impossible grammar in the "Star Wars" intro bit - which is just schizo - he's still just looks to me like a kid whose mum was really religious and whose dad was really into p-funk...imagine being shuttled between two houses like that as a kid, you'd come out like that n all lol.

With regards to Killah Priest going all religious... The one thing I don't understand is that certain music styles can be as religious as they want to be (think Reggae/Dancehall/Ragga) without anyone looking weird at them and yet get away with saying some really rough gangsta stuff. At the same time say religious Rap or any Rock type thing just sound out of place and tend to draw a lot of weird looks from people.

Concerning Lil'Wayne, yeah I would say the appeal is largely his quirkiness :) Been getting more and more into his stuff recently and as much as he is mainstream and popular, some of his rhymes are so offkilter and his flow is quite amazing. That "Show me what you got" freestyle showcased the flow really well. Content wise he's pretty boring, but it's kinda like listening to the Clipse I guess... It makes you feel big, especially while you're going around doing your work stuff and making money (alas in a very legal and sometimes plain boring way). At least I've found that it brings back a bit of that rush that I used to get from listening to things like Cypress Hill in their hey day or the Wu... You know where having this stuff in the player all of a sudden makes you walk a bit different, as pathetic as it is :)

Well, no, he was going on about the black hebrew and god's spaceship stuff on Heavy Mental - that hasn't really changed. What's changed is that Heavy Mental was a stunning and very intense and dense record, whereas the new music is really awful. You can gauge the difference in quality just by watching the videos - the Wu tang era videos are really quite good, with all the Shogun Assassin and Byzantine king imagery. It's like the difference between Jess Franco's Harry Alan Tower and Soledad Miranda era films and his more recent hand-held digital video abominations, if you see what I mean.

If you don't think that that 'Redemption' video is quite exquisitely - even quaintly - cranky then either your vision is blurred or your thinking is wonky.

Yeah I haven't really followed his output... So didn't quite realise he'd done it better beforehand. That video is definitely quite a low budget affair which is just plain strange and not in a good way either. I meant the whole religious thing being out of place on certain types of genres more as a general reference. I guess that answers my question by simply saying that if it's done well, then it's less likely to cause this kind of reaction.

There is lots of odd black modern belief systems in hip hop though, lots of the wu stuff etc, has lots of 5 percent stuff in it, but it's hidden in lyrical cyphers, killah priest does seem to be more into some of the stranger aspects, but then ol mf doom used nuwabian imagery in his artwork etc. Alot of the time it's more or less noticing it, as it's not always that open.

Very true... didn't really think of all the hidden bits, mostly for the reason of never really taking time to understand or learn about them, thus not catching a lot of them... but that's pretty much my point if ever they do it, it is often done in some cryptic form, while the Reggae artists can simply go out there and sing about Jah all day long :)

thats the nature of 5 percenter stuff though, it's a cypher, different from praising jah, esp as there is no outward god.
