Maybe this should have gone in 'Pointless but ...'
but it was a bit odd bit of info to read.
Comparing the price of keeping up royal family with price of a download per citizen.

It's the psychological / ontological cost of being ruled by Liz(ard) that matters.

Mind you, being a republic doesn't seem to have worked out to well for you lot.

Well I was kidding, but thinking about a distinction in a people's relation to their state between being that of 'citizens of a republic' or as 'subjects of a monarch'. You'd think that 'citizens' would feel a bit more enfranchised and be quicker to take corrupt politicians to task. Of course in practice it seems to make little difference, especially if both presidents and prime ministers effectively function as emperors. Fuck, it's hard to know who's in charge to what degree anyway. Who knows, maybe the British monarchy will turn out to be it's saving grace. When the 'elected' leaders are evil maybe an unelected figurehead might be of some real use.

But what is the real history, do we know?
