Late nineties hiphop recommendations

Spent the other night having a proper nostalgia fest on youtube over this stuff- it's still my favourite period of hiphop ever. all the ruff ryders/roc-a-fella/no limit etc posse cuts remixes were something else, especially to a 13 yr old kid who'd just discovered nwa in 98 or whatever.

Anyway, I went on a spree of ripping some of my fav tracks from cds that i hadn't listened to in years for my ipod, and I'm sure there are some dissensians who're up on some proper gems from this period that I haven't got/heard, so shoot away with recommendations/discussion. I'm much more interested in the mainstream stuff that was on BET during this period than the rawkus/coflow/etc underground that was burgeoning. and the more posse cuts the better! this is what i've got so far:

yes! that album is great. busta's videos from that period were mental- the 'got you all in check' remix with odb especially.

that Big L one reminds me- 'Da Graveyard' with like half of DITC and Jay-Z was amazing.

This is also my favourite period of hip hop. It was around '98/'99 that I first really started getting into hip hop; a friend of mine from Michigan whose family had access to a CD-burner before everybody else would give me stacks of this stuff whenever we'd meet at my cottage. This meant that I was listening to things like Eminem, Hot Boyz, Big Tymers, Ruff Ryders, No Limit, and Jay-Z long in advance of me even hearing about anything like Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-One, Eric B and Rakim, et al.

The Rub's installment for 1999 as part of their excellent ongoing History of Hip Hop series is a really good snapshot of this era, and captures a lot of my favourites from that year.

bandz ahoy
98 was when I got into Hip-Hop, I still have the tape of the first Westwood show I ever listened to lol

I was really into Rawkus and all that... a lot of its a bit worthy/bland when you listen back to it but also a lot of really sick stuff (see: Soundbombing 1) with a rawness and self-belief to it.

I also remember that the big newcomers then were DMX, Canibus and Big Pun (at least on Westwood). 'Niggaz Done Started Something' off DMXs first album is great... Canibus' album was pretty shit but 'Buckingham Palace' still does it for me...

Gang Starr - Moment of Truth too...

This is my possibly my favourite period of hip-hop too...and not so much the Rawkus type stuff, though some of that was alright. It's all about Ruff Ryders, Cash Money, No Limit, 3-6 Mafia etc. I'd say, check any of those first-wave Cash Money albums, like '400 Degreez' or 'Chopper City In Da Ghetto'...also 'Ghetty Green' by Project Pat. Some of the beats from this period are quality - Mannie Fresh was on fire, Beats By The Pound are waaaaay underrated, and I really like Swizz Beats' old sound.

off the top of my head:
'Off The Wall' - Redman and Eminem
'World War 3' - Ruff Ryders
there was a great ODB and Mystikal freestyle thing i DLed back then, that went 'THAT WU-TANG CLICK THAT NO LIMIT CLICK'...not sure what it was from. maybe a radio jobby.
'Ballers' - Project Pat, Hypnotize Minds, Hot Boyz
fuck there's loads more, brain's on the blink..

Missin Linx - MIA
All City - The Actual
DITC - The Enemy
DITC - Day One

Sorry, but this is 95, so not very late, but just listening to it now. So glad I brought the record at the time, because it seems to be rare and forgotten now, but listen to this BEAUTY:

This album is better than their first one. I'm sorry, it just is.

Whatever happened to Tippor Gore's PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT LYRICS stickers? Are they still around? Surely EVERY new album would have them now?

Beast of Burden
Sorry, too early again, but remains amazing:

Also, does no one agree that this is one of the greatest lyric performances ever committed?

Just asking.

yeah craner, you missed the point.... this is the synthetic era of swizz and neptunes etc
which had its moments but the thing is... the mcs were third rate at best, with the exception of big pun. thats why i can't love it that much
but yeah goodfellas actually is their best work though.... its a fact

I know! I know! I only wanted to mention a record I really like. It was a late night enthusiasm I'm sure.
