Nanotube Speakers

This is pretty exciting. It will probably be even more exciting in ten years' time when the tech becomes commercially viable.

How will new speakers look? Or not look, more to the point. I can see this being extremely useful for making speakers disappear...

something you can just hang on walls? like a poster-speaker

I wonder how they deal with the Low Frequencies since usually speaker designs rely on moving huge amounts of air to achieve sub 50hz frequencies.

The stretching bit looks cool... it says there is no noticeable sound degradation occuring, how cool would it be if it did pitch shift when you stretch it

some new weird musical instruments would be possible

To get good low-end you still need to shift large amounts of air, and you can't do that with a small diaphragm like the one in the video, for example. You'd still need subs, I guess.

The most obvious application for this stuff is to make really durable and sensitive electrostatic/ribbon type speakers. That's been very hard to do in the past.

The thing that popped into my mind was turning entire walls into speakers, entire rooms even. I'm not sure what that would mean acoustically speaking, but still.
