Darned cockwombles.
Question out of interest regarding Southern hip-hop: I read something recently that suggested that DJ Screw/Swisha House etc had taken the diametrically opposite path to the crunk axis and the Mannie Frech stuff, that they all operated in isolation of each other as separate scenes in the South. Is that accurate, and if so is it due to the seemingly localised nature of hip hop in the South, where artists can be incredibly popular in their own metropolitan area, but unknown nationwide or abroad?

Yeah that's sort of true, they did develop seperately.... the generally accepted logic goes that as you get closer to miami the music gets faster and as you get closer to Houston it gets slower. But I'd say that in many ways southern hip-hop culture is very pourus - there are no "rules" about "the culture" or whatever like that developed in NYC hip-hop - or more accurately, the "rules" tend to be about rappers behaviour (being "real" or honest or repping your hometown or whatever) rather than any sort of musical restrictiveness. David Banner talks in interviews about how he made "Like a Pimp" by taking in as many influences as he could, even going so far as to layer multiple types of drums so that it would sound as good in both the trunk of a car in Miami as it would on a boom box in New York. I'd really like to see somebody do some writing on the connections between the SF Bay area and the south - there are a lot of similarities with the influences of e-40 and too short and also master p used to make hip-hop in the bay area before going to New Orleans! But there are SO many different kinds of music being made, from screw in Houston to 3-6 mafia's gothic shit in Memphis and the bounce music in New Orleans and the ATL version of crunk (Lil Jon) and then of course Miami Bass - its a stew of influences.

Its on right now....ESG is supposed to be in!

edit: Oh man whatever song they're playing right now is great. Its one of those slow funky driving songs, and it samples the Average White Band, the same song from "Microphone Fiend" but the song is entirely different.

They gave a shoutout to Serg on the show.

Edit: Serg uploaded the ENTIRE show to mp3, its up at the shrimp right now. If you listen all the way through to the end they give a shout-out to our blog! The streets is feeling the shrimp!

New Pimp C album from rap-a-lot, supposed to drop on the 1st!

There's 3 tracks up on the shrimp, its some hot shit.

For those who need a quick history, basically Pimp C + Bun-B = UGK, and UGK have been throwing down southern shit for the past decade plus. The highest profile singles they've had were as guests on "Sippin on Syrup" (the origin of the shrimp's name, incidently) and of course Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin." Free pimp c!

Also if you check out more of the album, "Angel" is an amazing track - serg was gonna put it up but decided 3 was enough. I think I would have kept it and cut one of the others.
