I'd have thought so, but he was definitely male in the song, "He was an archangel of love" etc

Yeah, it's Gabriel anyway, i.e. a man's name. Follow up tune (I think there was a plan to do all the archangels) was 'Michael', which, uh, I can assure you is usually a man's name too.
