Musical Universals

zhao

there are no accidents
of course there are some, or many things about all music which is universal, because everything, and by this i do mean everything, is deeply, inextricably connected.

that snippet of Mafa music for instance, sounds similar to, just off the top, the flute music of Papau New Guinee, flutes of Madagascar, even old Irish jigs or Dutch or German traditional brass bands.

the history of musical cultures is a labrynth of interconnectedness... the gypsies imitate the Arabic/North African Ud, and created the guitar, which becomes Flamenco; they travel all over europe and left their already hybrid and multi-faceted flavors on every locale...

articles like this make something so intrinsic sound so novel...

I guess the research still leaves open the possibility that the tribes people appreciate Western music in predictable ways precisely because Western music, to however small an extent, is a descendant of their own music; and not that the relatedness is an inevitable product of the similarity of our innate tendencies as fellow homo sapiens.
