90s and 00s US house/garage

Darned cockwombles.
I've looked and I don't think there is a separate thread for this. I've been hearing so much classic US house recently, mainly i think from the New Jersey (?) Masters at Work/Quentin Harris/Todd Terry type axis.

Obviously funky house has reignited interest in a lot of this stuff, and I've picked up a few tips from there, but in the main I'm terrifically ignorant of what the best tunes here are.

Anyone care to enlighten me? :)

''Here are some mixes from a couple of my all time favourite house labels. I don't know if Strictly Rhythm is the most prolific house label ever but i can't think of another that has been going longer or one who has a more extensive back catalogue.

There is inevitably some/a lot of shit in amonst it but equally a massive amount of jems. What you'll hear in these mixes barely scratch the surface of this label and most of it is from the early years (early 90's) .

When hardcore/jungle/drum & bass came along it's not so much that i switched my alliegence more the fact i could'nt afford to buy house as well as the aforementioned genres as well.

Nervous is another label from the early 90's that i always followed. although not as prolific as Strictly rhythm the quality (on the good ones) was just as good as Strictly.

I can't post this thread without mentioning Nu-Groove records though. This would be my third label of choice from around the early 90's. will get around to doing a mix of thier stuff sometime in the future (don't press me on when though)

Anyway, on with the mixes. Just a word of warning this is mostly deep house so if you don't like that you might not like this.

New York Garage sounds good on paper (it's all about the vocals!), but a lot of the songs I've heard by these gospel singers in the 90's are really weak. I really dont know why someone decided to name london stuff UK Garage. The stuff they favoured were the quality dubby tracks like this & this...
...not full verse chorus verse chorus tracks thrown together by someone raised in the church who is understandably struggling to write several hit tunes a year.

I've heard several laughable claims by sunday scene veterans that their music was akin to what was played by Larry Levan, which seems like the poor choice of the word Garage is responsible for revisionist history.

Having said all that I do love a lot of this era of music. This Omar S mix is the one, wish I could identify some of the tracks. 9:04 is beautifully deep, as is 27:28

Not sure what you're saying there exactly Owen.

There would nearly always have been dubs of most of those full vocal tracks anyway.

And not just the vocals but the degree of swing and syncopated percussion is one of the things that distinguishes Garage, I think in part that's also why the name carried over, no?

You're right about the b side dub mixes. But to me those kind of tunes (like my 2 examples) are house rather than garaaage. The closest London garridge has come to blatantly US style gospel inspired stuff is some of the Tuff Jam tunes like Sweet Love, but the backing tracks are more UK flavoured.

i downloaded a couple of those mixes and foound them really boring. does that make me a philistine? the mixing is shit too but i don't care about that sort of thing much.
enjoyed a lot of the individual tracks people have posted youtube links to though.

i've been debating in the back of my head doing a mix of my favourite house tunes of all time, just to prove to myself i dont hate house per se, just both House Music Inc Megacorp (NASDAQ: BAIT + $37.85) and all the deep "real" house purism snobbery that claims to be counter to this but is actually just as dull...

That Mood II swing track is amazing. The B side is also great.
They were put on one of them Uptown bootleg EP's so maybe they were popular back in the day. 'Pick Me Up' was an alright track, but with those 2 tunes Mood II Swing showed they were capable of so much more.
