sex noises and electronic music

okay that got your attention

someone asked me if i'd heard of an artist called Jessica Vale who is doing an electronic music project involving the sounds of people having sex

seemingly a serious artist (it sounds a bit yoko/bottoms) not just someone aiming to titillate

curious if

A/ anyone's heard of this artist

B/ seems highly unlikely it's not been thought of before, any precursors for sex-noises and musique concrete, electronic shagging music, etc etc

I'm think Venetian Snares did this with the Praxis lady (Hecate, maybe?) that he was seeing--no I didn't hear it.

Vagina Dentata Organ released a whole album of orgasms and sex noises, mainly recorded during TOPY rituals. mid 80s... "Sex Star" I think it was. They also did one of wolf noises and the Jim Jones suicide recording. Quite interesting, I keep meaning to blog about them... there is an interview on uncarved.org I ripped off...

sometimes
wasn't this done on white noise's first album ' an electric storm'
track 'my kind of loving' i think, early 70's david vorhaus etc ..

l think that was probably the first time shagging noises and musique concrete stuff were mixed

You're completely right, it's not totally electronic. "I Feel Love", however, is, but you don't get 10 minutes of Donna's moaning and groaning.

Hafler Trio did it before, in the early 90s. 'Masturbatorium' and 'Fuck' were the albums that come of it. I borrowed the first one off a friend and thought it was great at the time... very rhythmic compared to other stuff by them that I've heard.

Although the whole CD was made of recordings from a woman masturbating I don't recall there being a single sound that I could identify. Maybe that says something about my level of experience at the time. With sound manipulation, that is. Honest. In the liner notes I recall that they recorded all kinds of biometric readings and so on, rather than only chucking mics in the room.. but hey, it's at least 10 years since I heard it or read the notes.

Hum... Googled Jessica Vale out of curiosity and found her site (www.thesexalbum.com). Nothing interesting seems really, just she taped people having sex and made music from and with it. Sounds boring.

Hafler Trio made a music concrete/electronic/industrial mini cd on Touch in early '90 using only the processed sounds from porn actress/porno philosopher Annie Sprinkle masturbating and having orgasms. The CD is called "masturbatorium" and the second part of this Sex trilogy is "fuck" with sounds generated by own Hafler Trio Andrew McKenzie "ritual" (yes, that ritual). The third part, "love" is annunced to be published soon and incorporate sounds from a meeting between Andrew and Annie. Hope they have had fun!

Never hear sounds from sex from INA-GRM music or from "serious" concrete composers, really, but remember there is a great weird cheap noise/concrete music from the first (even before "Deep Throat") commercial released porno, Bill Osco 1970 "Mona the Virgin Nymph". During a long shag there over the exaggerated moanings of the actors you hear a synthetized music, probably just a chap making weird electronic noises on a moog, and the mix sounded great. I haven't seen this movie for ages so maybe my memory is making this up. Also there aren't sounds of sex on somewhere on "music from The Body" by Ron Geesin/Roger Waters (no, not the first song!)? And Irene Papas faking an exaggerate orgasm in the "experimental" section of "666" by Aphrodite Childs? The first Vangelis album is called "Sex Power" but is so rare nobody know what it is.

Ciao da francesco.

Oh, it was Annie Sprinkle who they were recording, btw. She's some kind of new age prostitute, eh?

yeah, Venetian Snares & Hecate - Nymphomatriac springs to mind, although the sounds are all mutilated to the point that you can't recognise their origin anyway really.

yeah kind of a bit more than that.. She's a sex activist/educator/pornstar/performance artist kind of gal. I recall one piece she did where she was up on stage and invited audience members to line up and have a look at her cervix (using a speculum and a flashlight). It was cute.

I also recall a "breast ballet" (hers are pretty large and natural, and thus, erm, flexible) which is pretty humorous. She's a bit odd, very spacy and giggly and new agey and such. But pretty famous out here, especially in the San Francisco area.

in response to the original question

I read an interview with Jessica that said she wasn't trying to do something "different" as far as manipulated sex sounds goes - it's actually quite the pop album. And the subject matter seems more honest than most "sexy" crap. It was in the Times - anyone see it?

There was an album which just consisted of calls to fetish lines, and had a filthy Dutch advert for a front cover, it's a bit old hat really. This woman obviously isn't getting any. And the Traci Lords album is drivel, don't buy unless you think Stacey Q was a genius
