It's a BBC production called Beats Of The Heart from 1977. Think they did a short series concentrating on different genres for each show.

There's also a book that went with that series which I have somewhere, I will check if there's anything worth scanning in.

Looks like the DVD has had a proper reissue:

The film also features a really odd radio link, complete with bible reading and squeaky rat toy.

Here's the Abyssinians bit:

Does Evan Parker more closely resemble an owl or a badger?

Have I fallen for something by really, really loving Royal Trux (i.e. are they the American Primal Scream?), and is it okay to be doubting myself on this score simply because Alan McGee likes them?

blah blah... rock n roll, blah blah sexy ... don't give a fuck... mumble blah ... attitude ... balls blah di blah ... better than today's bedwetters drone drone.

No. Royal Trux /= Primal Scream.

i never ever got royal trux ever. There was such a big gap between their critical acclaim and anyone ever buying their rubbish records i'm sure.

see, i'd like to hate them but i feel that their records actually do capture what they were hyped to

In dancehall who or what is 'original street sweeper'? Is it a deejay or someone's alias or something? Sure I've heard it in a few tracks.

It's a riddim from the late 90s (1999?) by Steelie and Clevie I think.

But also probably slang along the lines of strafing a street with bullets?

Oh yeah must be that riddim. I thought I had heard somebody calling themselves the original street sweeper or something...maybe not though.

On Genius of Modern Music 1, do the mics pick up Thelonius Monk singing along as he plays? I only play it when I'm lifted, and I hear these strange murmurs and become fearful that kobbolds are trying to gain access to my house through the floor.

yeah he does that

there could be a thread about musicians who grunt/sing/make any kind of noise compulsively as they play

pablo casals did it a lot, it sounds pretty cool, a kind of erratic mumbling that follows the music in a vague kind of way
