YEEEESSSSS!!!!!

Utter genius. My favourite bit (no spoiler) is where some guy goes "He's the 45th kid to get killed this week. Do you think we should call the police?", or something to that hilarious effect.

later this week i plan to see the other two parts as i'm curious to know how the plot will develop. surely it can only be drivel from here onwards? no spoilers please!

Armando Iannucci's new thing, adapted loosely from the thick of it.

just really, really funny

I saw this yesterday -brilliant. Really funny throughout. The main theme seems to be more Brits prostrating themselves before Americans than the general incompetence/ cover up/ bollocking of the TV series, and it works.

After the first 15 minutes I was a bit worried it was just going to be a Malcolm Tucker one man show, bu the British characters are well fleshed out, even if the Americans are less so.

Some of the swearing grates after a while, though. And the best insult is when the really mental spin doctor calls Toby "Love Actually"

"guest of cindy sherman"

a low-budget doc by paul h-o, who did the public access show "gallery beat" and eventually dated/lived with/was dumped by sherman. a great document of the ny art scene through the 80s-90s-00s, excellent behind-the-scenes overview of sherman's career, good interviews with artists/critics/gallery owners, a story about how fame affects people, funny, touching. even includes interviews with elton john's husband about what it's like to be there but also on the outside.

surprisingly, sherman does not come off in a negative light, which could have been easy for paul h-o to do. hopefully coming to an art house theater near you, or dvd. worth seeing if you have any interest at all in contemporary art, the "pictures" movement, etc.

godard's histories of cinema... a film made for dvd, repays being scrolled across back and forth...

Yes, superb.

Just watched Dassin's 'Night And The City'- very good, albeit strange (at first) placement of Americans in London, with Widmark's Harry Fabian trying to conquer the wrestling promotion game - brilliant performance by him in full-on hyped-up mode and, if you can imagine it, what must be the greatest wrestling match in cinema (can there be much competition?) and the great irony of this story. Fantastic final chase scene too, especially where Fabian is climbing a staircase (one stunning shot of Widmark in close-up).

It really is sublime isn't it! Better writing than Shakespeare, so a friend of mine commented.

The subject matter is brilliantly handled and I like to think of it as being David Simon-esque. It's a view from above although 100 times more hammy than any Wire episode.

yeah, i find characters like freemon and brother mouzone really hammy. check out targets though, imo the whole thing is on higher plateau of hammyness.
