Oishinbo a la carte 2 is out:

oishinbo-sake-front-page.jpg

Not a patch on the first one (no narrative at all this time, repetition etc).

However, the next one is all about ramen. Yum.

edit; apologies for the big picture

Argh! Missed it in the shops I think.

Its certainly not essential*, but still excellent. Just not as excellent as the first one, as the weaknesses in the 'a la carte' style were highlighted.

However, I am now an expert in sake production post-WW2

*unless you love sake and/or alcoholic beverages with funny names.

Well, ok but my take would be that any mention of the 'Beats' just might make some people actually remember Kerouac and then have that little light go on when they see that somewhat recently published story co - written a long time ago by JK and Wm Burroughs.
And that imo would be a good thing.

Having said that -because I did find that book last time grazing in The Strand -
a graphic novel on Beats doesn't hold any interest personally !
Seeing some of them in the worn out or boozed out later cycles around the E Village has been quite enough of them thank you , those phases may not have made that graphic version.

THE BEATS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY The story of Jack Kerouac (and many, many others) get told in comic book form.

made me groan...

have you read it? i haven't... i am curious.... written by Harvey Pekar who was coming of age in Cleaveland during the beat era... i guess when he met r.crumb in the early 60's they were POST-BEATS...

he did a similar book on the SDS and the Weathermen... may get that one first, as i am not a huge beat fan either!

Oishinbo update!

No. 3 is out: Ramen/Gyoza

back on top form

This was great. The Gyoza chapters in particular. Interesting about the boiling/steaming vs. frying/deep frying technigues.

My favourite Goyza recipe is from a Japanese trained Chinese chef who steams them first and then fries them in a pan for a minute... you avoid that hard deep fried texture and the slimy boiled texture.
