Yeah I was wondering what was going on - thought I had another hour left and then when Dream was like 'this one's the last one' started thinking I must have got my times wrong, lol.

I love the G Smalls and Krispy show, I could listen to their banter all night. Local lads like Tate & Lyle! lol

I recorded tonight's show too so I'll stick that up later in the week. Even more get down get down and them talking shit about eastenders and that, its a right laugh. (good music too btw)

[q]Also also, can't speak for Tim but I'm happy for Funkystepz to get a release on Hyperdub if it means that more people find out about/listen to them plus keeps people interested in UKF generally. Although maybe they'll have already released it by then, I think Fuller would be a good choice of tune for them to use, because it has a similar feel to some of the other stuff on Hyperdub, but also fits with at least some of the other tunes that Fz already make, so it's like the best of both worlds.[/q]

I feel the same way. I hope whatever release eventuates is more fun (i.e. is more representative of Funkystepz generally) than the Ill Blu 12 (which was fine, but, like, some ways below being their best work). A Hyperdub release is a great chance to get exposure, it'd be a shame to waste it on some attempt at psuedo-Scratcha seriousness.

They have so many great tracks they could use though: "Fuller" was the first one that sprung to my mind too, but "Bubbly", "Piano Storm", "Mr Bandicoot" and ESPECIALLY "Hurrican Riddim" would all be ace choices as well.

they have two new wonderful tracks that might fit Hyperdub quite well and still be representative of what they do, I think. One's called "You Got It" and the other is a remix of "Estho - Bitch". They're the last two on the Funkystepz showcase of last Friday's show on Rinse (last 2 of the 1st hour), I really hope they're seeing vinyl either on that release or somewhere else.

I agree re: Ill Blu though, the Hyperdub 12" is way below their usual quality level...

OK, let me put this to everyone here while tim's also about. i've got end of year round ups to do soon and my gut feeling is uk funky has plateau-ed this year, in terms of creativity and output.

the circle camp have their thing running in parallel and personally for me in 2010 the 130 stuff that uk funky catalysed (night slugs, oneman/502, slackk, blunted robots, lots of the numbers output etc) has been far more inspirational than uk funky itself. yes you can point to the odd good uk funky releases this year but i'm talking in terms of overall genre quality.

anyone got a strong case to the contrary? i'm all ears...

Totally disagree obvs, unless you mean "plateau" in the sense that with funky 2010 is as strong as 2009 is as strong as 2008.

If you're looking for ostentatiously future-music thrills then funky isn't going to do this any more than 2-step did - in that it does it (speaking of which did anyone hear that mindblowing "Lion's Den" tune near the end of the 20 October Marcus set) but only in the course of achieving its other more central aims.

Even more than 2-step, funky has dispensed with any notion of linear development flirtation with which has never really done any of its predecessor genres any favours in the long run; instead you get this kind of spiralling outwards that pushes at all borders consistently - so the banger tunes can get more banging, the vocal tunes can getting more interestingly songful, the deep tunes can get dreamier, but then at the same time the internal hybridisation prevents all these strands from breaking away into disparate weaves. Hard to wrap up in a year-end review that makes it sound like 2010 brought you the future? Sure. But a drop off? No.

At any rate a comparison like "oh Night Slugs is better than funky this year" is just weird to me, not because Night Slugs is bad because most of the really awesome stuff from that camp (e.g. Kingdom's "Fog") is so different in feel, vibe, sound, tone, construction etc. that talking about that stuff in funky terms does it a disservice as much as it does funky (obv. something like the Lil' Silva 12 doesn't count here).

couldn't disagree more really. At least 90% of the best funky hasn't come out to buy but if you listen to radio sets on a regular there's fantastic new stuff getting played week in week out. If I was you I'd spend a couple of weeks listening to Marcus nasty, Petchy, Devine recordings, Funkystepz shows. To be honest Live FM has been miles better than Rinse this year too. Sorry Blackdown but I just don't think you properly 'get' funky really, it just doesn't seem to be your thing, or maybe you're just not listening in the right places.
