Ornella Vanoni, 'Quei Giorni Insieme a Te'

Riz also did a minimalist, sinister score for Lucio Fulci's anti-Catholic, anti-rural South giallo masterpiece Don't Torture a Duckling, but it wasn't even the best music in that film, because this was. This is from a scene where a local witch played by Florinda Balkan is brutally murdered by a vigilante gang who erroneously believe that she is responsible for a series of child murders, due to their own superstitious prejudice and misogyny. The song peaks as she is crawling to the edge of a new motorway, fatally injured, looking on as happy tourists from Northern cities drive by unaware, and all the messages from the film are encapsulated in this one scene with great pathos. It fully puts to rest the idea that Fulci was a hack or a misogynist himself, although his own despair and cynicism becomes evident in the later gore movies which has led to the accusation. A sad story. Even outside of this context it's a powerful song which I have been known to sing along to loudly in my car with very approximate Italian. Again, I have no idea what it is about, but I can feel what it is about.

Stevie Nicks, 'Nightbird'

Duckling, bird...geddit? Also, uh, witches.

I love Stevie Nicks. I love her voice, even the cracked croak that was left after years of chain smoking, boozing and drug abuse. I like the fact she wrote a song about a Welsh Witch. I like the way she wields a fan. I like her silly swirling outfits. I like her tiny, funky dancing. I like her erotic fixation and fury with Lindsey Buckingham even after all these years. I love her songs. 'Nightbird' is serious, majestic MOR, my favourite of her solo pieces. She straddles the fine line between ridicule and genius beautifully. I love her.

The Jones Girls, 'Nights Over Egypt'

They are not from Wales. I have this album and it's mostly forgettable apart from this, which is unforgettable; so atmospheric and smooth and nonsensical, like a sophisticated Boney M song or something.

Chic, 'A Warm Summer Night'

Like Todd, I could have picked a ton of Chic tracks. Their catalogue is a monument and allows some cheating in this game too (see next entry).

This is indescribably lush. Best track on their best album.

Sister Sledge, 'Easier to Love'

The Sledge!

But basically another sublime Chic production. They could do anything at this time.

This is an amazing album, but Love Somebody Today is also great.

Diana Ross, 'Love Hangover'

Very, very important to stipulate (Woebot style), it is the EXTENDED VERSION.

A shimmering disco epic.

Sylvester, 'Over and Over'

The Disco Everest.

The final song of the best night out none of us have ever had, because we didn't go to the Paradise Garage. Nine minutes of undiluted joy.

Patrice Rushen, 'Forget Me Nots'

Pure and stunning and kinetic. This is endlessly fresh, even after Will Smith's 'Men in Black'.

Sylvia Stiplin, 'Give Me Your Love'

Like Patrice this puts a spring in your step, a miasma of sweetness, a kind of soft mechanical funk with tinny horns that evokes early morning sunshine and erotic joy if you know what I mean.

Ok, I'll tag 'Erotic Joy' before anyone else does.

Junior M.A.F.I.A, 'Get Money'

Samples the other great Sylvia Striplin track, another Bad Boy hit. Used to hate this lot but I learned to enjoy their legacy in retrospect, see also Notorious B.I.G 'Juicy' and 'Big Poppa', Lil' Kim and Ma$e.

Nine ft. Smooth da Hustler, 'Make or Take'

Getting more money.

A late YouTube discovery, I didn't know this existed when it first came out. It's fierce, a late favourite. Smooth excels at these two handers (see next entry).

Smooth da Hustler ft Trigga The Gambler, 'Broken Language'

I read about this a while before hearing it. Neil Kulkarni made it Single of the Week in Melody Maker and his review consisted of a transcript of the lyrics followed by a declaration that this would be the greatest track of the year, and he wrote the review in March or something. It lived up to the rave when I finally got it. It's a novelty track, basically, isn't it? But perfectly executed.

Jeru the Damaja, 'Statik'

From DJ Premier's Golden Age. The economy of this track is incredible. So catchy, but made of nothing and timing in at a perfect pop single friendly 3 minutes. Of all his lush or harsh tracks for Gang Starr or Group Home and whoever else, I still love this one.

Usher, 'Burn'

Can you get a static burn? Not sure. Anyway...

This is the opposite of Erotic Joy...LOVE DEVESTATION.

Usher is so sensitive, so broken by his bad break up with Chilli from TLC, what will he do? He was writing Petrarchan sonnets to her, worshipping the sidewalks she skipped along, and then it was all over. What will he do?

He will sing! He will BURN!

This is the track you sing along to, loudly through tears, at petrol stations buying fags at 4 'o' clock in the morning, in agony, with your heart smashed all over the filthy, gum-blotched paving stones. It occupies the same space as Jagged Edge's 'Walked Outta Heaven' and Bob Dylan's 'Idiot Wind'. Tenderness, anger, despair.

Ciara, 'Oh'

Around the time that Usher's heart was in small, sensitive pieces and he was touring the world earning smashing amounts of money to sing about it, there was a splurge of amazing R&B tunes like this one that I loved. Post-Aaliyah, production-driven, the anti-Beyonces. '1, 2 Step' by Ciara was also good.

Cassie, 'Me & U'

This was the same vein, at another level. This is like when Timbaland claimed he'd never heard jungle. With this one it was like, what, you haven't heard Ed Rush? Really?

I was addicted to this song. (Not the video, honest!)

Aurra, 'You and Me Tonight'

This song is pure drama! "Kurt? What do you want to talk to me about?"

The most sublime argument ever.
