Loving Vincent would also make it into my five favorite films
So I just went through the 1,842 films I've seen and gave a 0-5 star rating on Letterboxd, and the only 5-star reviews I gave were for:

The Long Day Closes (1992)
The Color of Pomegranates (1968)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
Man with a Movie Camera (1929)
Loving Vincent (2017)

There are probably a handful of films I'd call perfect in their own right, but they don't necessarily overlap with those 5-star reviews. With the stars, and the logic behind that mode of rating, its a combination of stuff like: how important is this film in the evolution of my appreciation of the artform? how deeply did this film resonate with me? do what degree could I discern mastery or innovation of the artform? etc.

Nothing too systematic, I just went through over the last two days and gave a kneejerk rating to all of these, kinda just wanted to see what the spread would look like if I did it in so purely an instinctual manner.
Now that I think about it, this mode of rating is almost just a measure of the respect I have for these films.

Any love round here for Mona Lisa? I just re-watched it, after doing some work stuff on his other films. At first it was *really* annoying me - Hoskins' character seems so naive it's ridiculous, and they over-played the mental damaged child-women card a bit with a couple of the prostitutes, but other than that, Ithought it had some real moments. The sequence on the pier at the end with the Elton John shades is pretty great.

I watched it last night. It lives and dies by those two lead performances, really. Everything around it doesn't match up. They're just so good that they carry the film, particularly Hoskins.

"Haven't you ever needed someone?"

"All the time."

watched inherent vice coz i'm on a california thing at the moment, finding that wave of retrospective california in the 40s / 70s etc pretty interesting. anyway it went straight over my head, did not get what they were going for at all. what is that thing that's going on in the last decade where there are these fairly big films which are all aestheticised recent-historical setting? that licorice pizza one is like that too and there's loads of it about.

i searched for a discussion on here and when you type 'inherent vice' into the search bar the results are about one hundred posts by @version

i think he must be one of the film lads that i'm anti. i don't get his style. what's supposed to be good about it? someone must think its good.

the other person who's style i hate is that greek one who made poor things and the lobster film. i know why i hate that a bit more, it's because it's this affected eccentric style. and coz i think he's trying to talk about love and sex and i think me and him disagree about everything on that.

A bunch of Paul Thomas Anderson's stuff loses money. Nobody seems to know how he gets the budget for the next one, given how ruthless Hollywood can be.
