Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

I'd like to unreservedly recommend the film Heartbeat Detector which I saw the other night and thought was great. It's hard work to watch - it's long, you have to figure out a lot of stuff for yourself, and it's very bleak - but I really liked it and it has made me think. It stars the guy...

    the concept of "cheesy"

Susan Sontag? I think cheesiness has something to do with the expressed sentiment not seeming 'realistic' - so it might seem fake because it's expressed in a sketchy or cliched way that doesn't ring true, or because it's unrelenting in a way that outlasts your ability to empathise - in fact...

    Inheritance Tax

I was really disappointed in the Labour government for announcing this. Here's a link to an article on the mechanics behind the repeal of a similar tax in the US: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v27/n11/runc01_.html "how did the repeal of a tax that applies only to the richest 2 per cent of American...

    Celine and Julie Go Boating

I felt the same when I watched it - it's not fun watching the same thing over and over - BUT - it has stayed with me and I seem to have warmed to it in retrospect... I'll need to watch it again. I liked Paris Nous Appartient (sp?) more - it's by the same guy - much earlier but is similar in...

    Jeff Keen

Is this the Cineblatz guy? I tried a similar search a while ago but could only find a few listings of galleries that had shown his films. Please do post if you find out more.

Not sure, but I had thought the story was just that he had played with Fela Kuti, rather than having recorded with him?

    critiques of science

So are you (inductively?) arguing that: 1) People have not believed in using induction for a very long time. 2) There is something wrong with using induction. Seriously though, don't we all think inductively all the time, including scientists?

    multiple sovereignties

Point taken, big changes, sure; but acknowledging this isn't to say states are in decline. In ascendance if anything. Out of interest, why not your bag?

    multiple sovereignties

Nah, states aren't in decline. Financial globalisation has caused some states to cede power to OTHER states, or perhaps to commecial interests IN other states; but the idea that there's some zero sum balance of power between states and markets/tech in which states are uniformly losing out is...

    multiple sovereignties

Not sure but I think it may infact be an OLD word rather than a recent coinage. But as far as I'm aware it's currently used exclusively in connection to nation states, though I may be wrong...

    multiple sovereignties

Surely not - Sovereignty is surely a modern development that emerged with the birth of nation states after the Peace of Westphalia? I don't think you can have sovereignty (multiple or otherwise) without a nation state. If by multiple sovereignty you mean that there has to be a sufficient body...

Bands that don't exist, but should.

Lust Faust; a made-up band invented by some artist(s?), as displayed at the ICA a while back. I saw a two page glossy spread on them in some magazine recently that was touting them as a little-known 'lost classic" act, and I don't think the article was tongue in cheek...!

    what are you reading now?

Oh and he did a translation/interpretation of Confucius that I really enjoyed, perhaps you could try that?

    what are you reading now?

I really like The Cantos and I think it's best approached by just reading it really quickly and letting it all wash over you. Don't sit there and look up all the quotes and references the first time you read it. It's not a code for what he really wants to say; it's just a crazy collage of stuff...
