Books on UK life in late 50s...

Thanks! Thanks so much! I've read some Murdoch but none of the others, and the non-fic titles look good too. One book that is very very specific about this time and how the 50s/60s altered is The Trial of Lady Chatterley, particularly since it went all the way to the Old Bailey and Lawrence...

    what are you reading now?

Count me in on the Berger love, and yeah, how did the Booker people miss him? Maybe they think the festival back in April was enough?

    Kate Moss

I have the same birthday as her - not year, just day. So I've always liked her (and Sade, for that matter) for the same superficial reason. Whether I have any of her remote untouchability remains to be seen. Coco's a good perfume, but I like the original model icon for it, Ines de la Fressange!

who is better: paul mccartney or phil collins?

I don't know about inventing techno, but McCartney sure helped heavy rock/grunge along with Helter Skelter.

What's the lyric? Crying won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good... Canada has formally offered help but was refused by Bush, but some Canucks are going down to help out anyway. I cannot help but think that if this was a more Republican area then help would have arrived a damn sight...

The Arcade Fire - shit or clay?

I love Arcade Fire and I get shivers when I hear "Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)." I don't quite get the early Simple Minds reference, but I love them too, including New Gold Dream.

Cover Versions That Mess With The DNA

The poppy version of Mrs. Robinson is by The Lemonheads and it's pretty good... Paul Anka has an album out, Rock Swings, which may qualify here too. Rock Swings is all big-band versions of mostly alternative tunes but also True by Spandau Ballet.

Books on UK life in late 50s...

Hi! I am currently researching the late 50s-early 60s in the UK and wondered if there were any books out there besides the one I'm currently reading - Never Had It So Good by Dominic Sandbrook. I am looking for something else like it, that will give me a good idea of what it was like overall...

Cover Versions That Mess With The DNA

Nick Cave - Tower of Song - not so much a mess up of the DNA but when he tries to do his Cohen impression and cracks up, I love it! Also: Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire - completely odd until the vocal comes in and you realize what it is. And for the hell of it, Sloan covering Stove and...

    Coldplay "sampling" Kraftwerk.

In defense of Coldplay: at least they know enough to rip off/pay homage to Kraftwerk.

is "repoire" a word in the english language?

A language question! Whoo-hoo! (Yeah I'm something of a word nerd) Repoire is a great word but I don't know if it exists in any language. From your examples I think the word is rapport and of course it comes from the French.

kanye "diamonds" / hype williams' video

I don't know about the lyrics (I've only seen the video once, pretty conscious as far as videos on high rotation get these days, I suppose [is it on high?]) - but I am glad that someone is at least paying attention to the blood diamond trade (or as they're known in the biz, 'conflict') and...
