ok - obviously a difficult thread to start without inviting spam or self-promotion - neither of which will be tolerated.

the rule is this:

1) recommend either a mix on youtube, a youtube playlist, a spotify playlist, a soundcloud, mixcloud mix or direct download (you get the idea - other formats tolerated)

2) must be by a third, unrelated party.

3) one mix per post.

4) the more wide-ranging musically the better. new or old music. mix can be strictly hip-hop or strictly rock music - but both would be eligible. as would a genre pile-up.

5) has to be ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. no chaff pls.

Not going particularly obscure here, but I think Kode9's DJ Kicks fits the criteria. It's everything UK Bass could have but wasn't.

Not really a fan of Bukem as a producer, but this is one of the best jungle mixes ever recorded during the golden years:

2-01 Studio Pressure -- Book Of Changes
2-02 Appaloosa -- Unplugged (Chaos & Julia Set Remix) Remix -- Chaos & Julia Set
2-03 Photek -- Feeling Up
2-04 D.O.P.E. -- Travelling Part II
2-05 Sounds Of Life (2) -- Release The Bells
2-06 Studio Pressure -- Relics
2-07 Plasmic Life -- Water Baby
2-08 Red One -- Alive And Kickin'
2-09 Randall & Andy C -- Sound Control
2-10 Nookie -- Only You
2-11 Studio Pressure -- Presha 3
2-12 FBD Project -- Journeys
2-13 Higher Sense -- Cold Fresh Air

bandz ahoy

ILX's Andy Kellman has compiled playlists of 20 R&B songs from the 1970s up to the close of the 90s. This one is 1990. They're all great. He's also done numerous other ILX related playlists.

co sign the rub mixes, 94 being my fave. Probably all fairly obvious choices if you're a committed 90s rap nerd, but so well put together.

DJ Q recently posted this 80 minute mix of classic bassline. No tracklist but apparently theres over a 100 tunes!

Ive been obsessed with a French guy named Boebis who writes two thousand word blog entries about obscure points in the history of samba music. He has a blog called Bonjour Samba and posts mixes at Sounds and Colours:

Woebot do you mean that the mix itself has to be wide-ranging musically or that the thread can encompass all sorts of genres?

Because if it's the latter then Mickey Finn's set for Roasts Christmas Party 1994 is a must. Not just one of my favourite mixes, but one of my favourite 'albums' (maybe THE favourite) of all time.

Yeah, and what about 'Recommended mixes AND playlists'? Its like saying "Recommended paintings and... ...colours?" ;)

the latter.

not about genre pile-ups within mixes but stuff from all over the shop - but if they're good - bring 'em on.

This guy has a record shop in St Ouen flea market in Paris. I bought a few things off him when I was there, and then found him online. Great shop, and some killer mixes. This one is all French West Indies gear. Totally unknown to me, all killer.
