    would you ever vote conservative?

my local polling station (in the hall adjoining a cathedral) last year (first time voter!) was staffed entirely by fearsome old tory ladies. they were just about sentient enough to tell that my protracted scribbling sounds could signify only illiteracy dementia or infantile ballot spoling...

    What is the Best Newspaper?

absurd as it is to think a broadsheet will cover music to the satisfaction of anyone likely to be posting here, i do agree there is at least a sense of naive enthusiasm in the telegraph's coverage that elevates it above alexis petridis and the like.

    What is the Best Newspaper?

surely not ;0 that execrable u2 fellating twat, smug nonsense about how we should be very happy because of british music selling again, classical reviews that might have been archive reprints from the 30s 'vaughn williams, splendid, rich, colourful' and so forth although there was a piece...

    Arctic Monkeys Explosion.

isn't it legititmate to decide they're not_a_good_thing just from pictures of them? or the opening paragraph of a broadsheet newspaper article about them? in the observer? a few weeks ago the subtitle of a puff piece described them as publicity shunning, followed by several pages of pictures of...

press release for new aphex twin album 'chosen lords'

The notion that AFX post rdj (or hangable auto bulb) is a sort of teleological end in western music is amusing but I can sympathise with it. As a kid dismisive of 4/4 techno, jungle etc, those and the subsequent 90s releases were very important, the abuse and appropriation of those popular...

    Film Popism

vertov could definitely be considered avant garde, if you use that as a catch all for various early-mid 20th century artistic movements, i don't think you could situate sirk and dozvhenko in that way. the 'sirk industry' claim can dismiss the 70s criticism, the fassbinder-brechtian side of...

    Film Popism

in the sense that vertov or dozvhenko were still making films for 'popular' consumption, as were the weimar expressionists, even if they were from an avant garde background. the same could be perhaps be said for sirk in the fifties.

    Film Popism

could you expand on that? also the art/mainstream dichotomy didn't really exist in the 20s (nascent surrealism etc excepted)
