    Bad cover versions

Kozelek is guilty of quite a few bad covers — as Sun Kil Moon, he released "Tiny Cities," an entire album of Modest Mouse songs. It's pretty awful.

the dark side of alt country

i love 'axxess & ace' as well; the whole disc makes it molina's best if only for "captain badass." also worth mentioning is "the lioness" which was recorded in glasgow with arab strap - can't get any darker than that i suppose. :) and nina nastasia's "run to ruin" is a tweaked-out slice of dark...

    The Touch & Go Thread

Here's part II of the Pfork feature. I like how it's arranged chronologically- you can really see how the label has expanded over the decades.

    Surrealism in Music

Ben Sisario's book on The Pixies' Doolittle (in the 33 1/3 series) discusses almost exclusively the influence of Surrealism, Bunuel, and, most recently, Lynch- on Frank Black.

    Lady Sov's Stateside success

here in the states, lady sov's track "love me or hate me" is the background music in a tv advert for a mp3 player/mobile by verizon. now if that's not stateside success, i don't know what is.

    Shakespeare

well, it's definitely his goriest play. imho, the film directed by Julie taymor is absolutely wicked. great set and costume design, very carnivalesque and stylized, and jessica lange is captivating.

    DC Hardcore

Love it all! Fwiw, Pitchfork was the first pre-Jehu collaboration between John Reis and Rick Froberg. If you're into the San Diego scene, it's worth listening to Hot Snakes, which had both Reis and Froberg. Suicide Invoice has to be my favorite of their albums, but Automatic Midnight and...

Books you've never got around to finishing

Hate to admit things like this, but... Leslie Marmon Silko- Almanac of the Dead (1992) Jonathan Franzen- The Corrections (2001) Both for very, very different reasons. The Franzen is overhyped, period. Vapid characters, meandering storylines, insufferable dialogue, stilted action- the 600+...
