I give them the benefit of the doubt and agree with Slothrop.

Sorry, I got confused too. Currently it takes 50% + 1 MP. The change proposed (to 55%) is a little worrying/odd - likely over-compensation for the perceived lack of stability of the new government.

UK GENERAL ELECTION THURSDAY MAY 6th 2010

As for people not being able to vote... Yes, each individual station needs to be better equipped, but to invalidate the whole election is unworkable when: The burden is mainly on you: You have had 15 hours to vote. They don't knock on your door. Weeks in which to request a postal vote There...

UK GENERAL ELECTION THURSDAY MAY 6th 2010

Fixed terms are a blatantly good idea, one that I have heard little significant opposition to. Giving the right to the Prime Minister to pick and choose the moment, having used short-termism to artificially inflate his position, is ludicrous. Before the coalition I heard both of the parties...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

Lady in the Water Magnificent, joyful fun. Re District 9, I thought the exact opposite about this rotting landfill of a film - face-palm simplistic allegory, awful acting and a hateful undertone; why can't we feel sorry for the aliens without the humans being portrayed as insanely moronic...

Ucho - about a Communist party member under suspicion, and whose marriage is under severe pressure because of it. Very good. Antichrist is excellent.

    Sergei Paradjanov

Paradjanov was also inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini, whose films have a similar feel and colour palette.

    Roiling football blather

That's still the best performance I've seen. As far as I remember Barcelona went in to the match as strong favourites (Baresi and Costacurta suspended) Desailly in his old central midfield position was monstrous. Savicevic was inconsistent (half the time on the bench too) but unbelievably...

No, I didn't. I just remember the seasons of utter brilliance at Parma and Juventus. They all make mistakes but he makes fewer than anybody.

I've always thought Casillas safe on crosses. Punching is not necessarily a sign of bad keeping. Most punches are when you can't be sure of getting a firm grip or a catch isn't actually possible. My vote would go to Buffon as the best.

    Watchmen

If the comment is beneath the kid with the spotlight, it's my subjective opinion (tautological in itself). I don't like it; it doesn't work because it fails to make me like it. It doesn't work for me. I've shown my working.

    Watchmen

No it's not, so it's a good thing you don't. I have been mainly talking specific to Watchmen and its specific flaws within the specific parameters it sets for itself. "Well it could never be an essay" Obviously "Watchmen" couldn't be. I was talking about the ideas, themes, concepts behind it.

    Watchmen

Well, "i don't like it" because "it doesn't work". Again, it's not arbitrary. Every work is unique. The same approach will have two different outcomes - Watchmen sets out to give us strong character and story while Notre Musique doesn't. The parameters and context are worlds apart. A work can...

    Watchmen

I said it shouldn't feel like that's all there is to it. I read the Nausicaa manga which is full of the authors' ideas and concerns about war, environment, life, death etc. but they are subsumed into and illuminated by the story - they don't trample on it. It's not an arbitrary demand at all...

    Watchmen

The story needs to have its own life, not just feel like a vessel for a writer's concerns and ideas. I want to be impressed by what the puppet is doing (and then I'll praise the puppeteer).

    Watchmen

Yes, but Romeo and Juliet are actually happy together to begin with. My point is that the comic is detached from the world, the general people we are meant to care about saving and how we save them. It is possible to show the Watchmen as detached, disillusioned, cruel without letting those...
