Massive Attack curated Meltdown line up released

cripes - Gong! who's actually in that damn band nowadays?

    Gong

there's lots of great synth playing over all of the early -> mid 70s albums. and this interplays with the guitar really well. but all of the albums are a bit ruined by the teapot stuff, really. far less cloying are the solo efforts - hillages "fish rising" and tim blake's "new jerusalem"

Swansong, or: What will the fat lady sing at your funeral?

continuing the "wyatting", i'd go for his version of chic's "at last i am free" followed by can's "i'm so green"

PROG ROCK- breaking news, gossip, libel, lies etc

pip pip pyle - drummer from the very, very wonderful "hatfield and the north" and the teapot gong (+ many, many others) has died soon after a hatfield reuinion gig. his solo stuff was pretty dire but his drumming was always discreetly musicianly. sorely missed.

desperate bicycles / overtly political music

i find most overtly political songs to be cringeworthy but, sonically at least, this heat's deceit is the winner here.

    This Heat ReR box set

This just arrived today and I'm completely bowled over by it. "Deceit" is absolutely stunning. It's a record I've always wanted to love but couldn't due to my perception of it's muddiness but that's all changed now. It's one of those few times I've listened to a remastering treatment on an...

PROG ROCK- breaking news, gossip, libel, lies etc

henry cow's "concerts" has been remastered and will be re-released this year. bob drake, who has done a lot of the ReR remastering in recent times, says that he's managed to make it sound like it always should have. ie good. can't wait for that one.

Eno is back with Roxy Music

the Roxy reunion tour from a couple of years ago was great. they all seemed in fine form and the track selection, thankkfully, lent towards the early material. andy mackay still can't play very well but that was always part of their charm.

Eno is back with Roxy Music

as per enoweb: "NME.com is reporting Ananova.com's story that Roxy Music has reformed with Brian Eno in the line-up. This untrue and just in-good-faith wishful thinking from the journalists -- Brian has no involvement with the band's current recording or tour plans. All that happened was that...

    Indie Rock or wot?!?

The M's record due out this year is the best rock based release I've heard in a couple of years. Good -> terrific songs; great guitar playing - lots of overdubs too; orchestral flourishes and occassional avant touches.

new from Brian Eno and Depeche Mode

the new eno is pretty good, if a little polite. everything he touches recently has that same feeling for me. the conceit of the album is that "anyone can make music nowadays - the only thing left is song writing" which is patently false. in any case, eno's song writing on "another day on earth"...

    this seems wrong to me

in case you didn't know, there are actually TWO versions of faust out there at the moment. the one touring the UK now is JH Peron and Zappi D + some youngsters. the other has Irmler + youngsters (and maybe Zappi as well even if he's playing here now). with JHP it should have lots of the funny /...

the pentangle did it all and so, so much better

What does the music you listen to say about YOU?

i'm constantly searching for music that will inspire me as much as the stuff i listened to in my youth once did. so, if i read any references to krautrock, post-punk, etc in reviews i give them a try. the only one that's really made it on that level in the past few years are the boredoms (but...

    Pere Ubu

from this pdf : http://ubuprojex.net/press/tmrt-eu.pdf dt keith moline - guitar rob wheeler - keys michele temple - bass steve mehlman - drums other than dt no original members at all but, just like the fall, they always sound sorta similar (on erecord at least)

    Delia and Gavin.

so what's that synth she's playing?? looks like an old analogue arp 2600!! and, gulp, they're into mime: http://www.aleksandramir.info/projects/mime/mime.html

    The Chap "Ham"

i've got the chap (and isolee) and they both really lack some undefineable thing for me to make them great. each have 3 really good tracks and the rest are permutations of these with lessening impact on each listen. at least neither over-stays the welcome.

records that sound better at the wrong speed

any philip glass piece sounds great at slower speeds but especially the early things like "music in fifths' and 'music in similar motion'

    strange post post punk experiments

the vast majority of the sydney post-punk stuff that came out of the m-squared label probably meets this criteria. try 'scattered order', 'makers of the dead travel fast', 'prod', 'acra' and various solo projects.
