anyone do video editing on a PC?

I've been using Vegas since before it was a Sony product. It is good, very flexible and the sound manipulation leaves FCP for dust (not surprising as Vegas started life as an audio tool, apparently). I really like FCP, too - except for the audio which is a P-A-I-N. Sony also do a lite version...

    Other Forums

:D A place for sad old geeks like moi www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum where, amazingly, I'm "mod". Still, if you want to improve your vinyl replay capability there isn't anywhere better. I used to hang out at http://forums.allboutjazz.com , but fell out with a particularly annoying mod / knowall...

Hugh Masekela - 'Techno Bush' [the Manu Dibango thread]

Pretty much anything by Manu Dibango, my favourite is Afrovision (probably because I picked up a copy dirt cheap and enjoy seeing other people pay far more than I did). This is a deeply funky album, though not that African sounding in the final analysis. Africans are far more advanced musically...

    Field Recording Equipment

Possibly, but it's well out of date, and not exactly "broadcast quality" as they used to say. Maybe that is of little interest to most people, but it is to me.

    Kraftwerk sightings

Tour de France is superb. Muscular minimalism of the nu-old skool. I also love the campy teuton French accents: They know *exactly* what they are doing. Anyway, if you like that, you will just lurve this: Although you need the 4LP box set, and to be appropriately geeky, the German one at that...

    Field Recording Equipment

That was probably me... David Lewsiton most certainly does not not advocate cheap mics ;) - except for a pair of dynamic omnis (his preference is for EV K50s) as backup for moments when condensors simply can't hack it (too wet or too hot or a combination of the two). David's recording track...

    Kraftwerk sightings

The Minimum-Maximum set was apparently half-speed mastered at Metropolis and is simply stunning on vinyl. Just be careful to make sure you get flat pressings, especially Disc 1  as there seem to be QC issues at the pressing plant. Whatever, it's a kolossal, perfekt sound.

    congotronics

From the Economist article: Congo's music industry, like its politics, has a few crooks and rabble-rousers at the top. But, almost incredibly, down among the weeds, Congolese music and the brutalised people who really make it are thriving still. Perhaps it's a cliche, but Africa seems saturated...

Is the internet really good enough?

That was me. Back in the late 70s I read NME and Sounds every week, as you say, from cover to cover and then back again. Those were sombre, troubled times. Music often reflected that and provided us as listeners, but obviously writers and musicians as well, with a stage on which to express...

Inner Sleeves? Where's good to get them online?

This is the place to go to: http://www.mickandviv.com/hifiaccessories.htm Mick is a nice guy, the prices are good and Nagaoka sleeves are the best.

    Field recordings & indigenous peoples

Hi, As far as field recording equipment goes, depending on budget and skill levels, I would suggest either a Fostex FRSII or a Marantz PD670. Both are capable of high quality recording. The Fostex is the better tool: it is more flexible, rugged and can record at higher quality (24/192 is about...
