For all raps old and new

BLACK MOON - MAKE MUNNE 1993

I've never listened to Enta Da Stage before. Weirdly, since I have loved Who Got Da Props and I Gotcha Open for many years. Other than those ones, this has been the highlight so far. Name other tracks with this sort of bassline - I know there are quite a few, a Mobb Deep 'Infamous' track I think? Also Time's Up by O.C.

LIL YACHTY MAN - SHOOT OUT THE ROOF (2017)

This is my favourite rap song of recent years - unexpectedly. It really reminds me of 90s rap without being a slavish/stale imitation of it. It's aggressive but playful. The shouty chorus especially is very 90s - see the Black Moon Choon I posted upthread.

Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future, James Blake - King's Dead (2018)

I'm actually into this tune, beat is hard... Future's verse is hilarious and arguably atrocious

Very funny parody here

Also from the BLACK PANTHER OST - as a Marvel fan I am hyped for that movie

Here’s my basis my razor embraces, many faces,
You’re telephone-blown, Black,
Stitches or fat shoelaces

- NAS 'Memory Lane' (over angelic choirs)

'And that last half is the best because it is so specific to New York City in 1994. If you were around, you remember kids carrying razor blades in their mouth, spitting them out in a crowded club with a puff of air, slicing another kid’s face from ear to the corner of the mouth… That’s why, contrary to what all the lyric websites tell you, Nas is not saying that his telephone is “blowing.” He’s saying “telephone blown,” meaning your face has been blown wide open with a telephone cut (also known as a buck-fifty, because of the number of stitches you’d need). The last line refers to your scar, either stitched up or left with a puffy “shoelace” keloid.'

Listening to Illmatic, up to 'One Love'

The perfect album, always makes me want to cry when I listen to it cos its so perfect...

I mean it isn't actually perfect ('one time 4 your mind' is the weak link afaic although still full of classic lines) but near as to make me weep at the divine spark

A list of rap songs that have me teary this week

NAS - Memory Lane
FREEWAY - What We Do

Because they're so good, but also as they recede into history they become more poignant, especially cos their quality totally transcends the years in real-time

Mind you da kidz might find these boring

illmatic's quite potently wistful (to borrow a phrase) for me because the imagery it conjures in my mind matches the weather and the general mood i was in when i first discovered it. i get this rose tinted, half-imagined, nostalgia-on-steroids when i listen to it. it's strange, because when i was a kid, 90's rap still sounded relatively modern, but in recent years it sounds so archaic, endearingly so.

im at the age where i cant conceive of anything after '94 as being in any way old and things from the '00s i cant help thinking of as modern.

not to be a spoilsport but ive got zero interest in listening to hiphop of any era at the moment. bored sick of it. although just to contribute this was a much talked about moment we all studiously ignored

"Presto, read the Communist Manifesto" will always be my favorite opening line of any rap song ever

whole song is full of gems "rip thru em from the tip of my Mao-Tse tongue", the immortal "I'd like to take a moment and say 'Fuck Columbus'"

+ huge love to Oakland, one of my favorite places on Earth

Ultramagnetic MC's introduction of 1989 NBA All-Star teams

just an inexplicable historical artefact. It goes on for NINE MINUTES. there's no hooks either, just the minimal James Brown loop.

Totally, totally awesome, just mindbending. I mean they rap about Mark Eaton, and Mark Price.

sidenote: way more white American dudes in the NBA in 89, nowadays they'd be introducing hella Euro dudes
