you're on your own
No kidding. Some things never change. Maybe I'm immune to the hysteria and jouissance that drives these hyperbolic debates about identity politics. It just sounds like everyone proclaiming their identity at the same time, just trying to drown out anyone who doesn't fit their prototype of what a person is supposed to be. It's all just noise signifying nothing, post-semantic groupthink, debates that arrive at nothing and just keep spiraling down the drain. Ever since social media started consuming every aspect of life, identity politics has become the pathetic dying whimper of political, philosophical, and intellectual discourse. This applies to both ends of the political spectrum, which have become absurd self-parodies. Future generations are watching and laughing, trust me.
Anyone interested in JP in his professional, not public, persona as a psychoanalyst should check out his university lectures (mostly in front of young women). Some good ones:
Why you shouldn't lie and the truth about DMT:
The man is a fucking idiot. He thought the accusation of 'romancing the noble savage' referred to him having gay sex with an indigenous Canadian tribesman.
Peterson, however, seems to have modelled his public persona on Jung rather than Campbell. The Swiss sage sported a ring ornamented with the effigy of a snake—the symbol of light in a pre-Christian Gnostic cult. Peterson claims that he has been inducted into “the coastal Pacific Kwakwaka’wakw tribe”; he is clearly proud of the Native American longhouse he has built in his Toronto home.
Peterson may seem the latest in a long line of eggheads pretentiously but harmlessly romancing the noble savage. But it is worth remembering that Jung recklessly generalized about the superior “Aryan soul” and the inferior “Jewish psyche” and was initially sympathetic to the Nazis. Mircea Eliade was a devotee of Romania’s fascistic Iron Guard. Campbell’s loathing of “Marxist” academics at his college concealed a virulent loathing of Jews and blacks. Solzhenitsyn, Peterson’s revered mentor, was a zealous Russian expansionist, who denounced Ukraine’s independence and hailed Vladimir Putin as the right man to lead Russia’s overdue regeneration.
