Let's Talk About Ceps
Because I'm shallow and like pretty things, I feel compelled to mention Bath, Durham, Oxford (the centre, anyway), Cambridge...I gather York's a bit of a looker but I've never been. Geneva is a dumb blonde of a city - gorgoeus but a bit dull. Actually in fairness there's quite a good d'n'b club there. The lake, river and surrounding countryside are probably the best aspects.

Chicago heartily thirded, fourthded or whatever we're up to. Bristol, too (my home town).

backing up nominations for the following:

Kyoto- temples, wicked food, the maddest train station on earth, not a massive metropolis.

Tokyo- mentalism, a massive metropolis

Montreal- an awesome mix of North America and olde Europe, never eaten so well, locals crazy friendly and helpful.

Leeds- I'm glad it's my nearest city. I'm not sure it's worth a fleeting visit, mind

Copenhagen- bloody expensive, but like the Dutch cities mentioned below, has a certain something that UK cities could do well to emulate.

Barcelona- Barri Gotic

Others:

Any of the Dutch cities which aren't Amsterdam (Groningen, Maastricht for example)- liberal yet civilised, not full of pissed/stoned/porn addled tourists.

Edinburgh- it's all old and that.

Oxford (defo not Cambridge)- but only on a hot summer evening

Rome- it's all old and that. and hot.

Not:

Brum- an empty hole ruined by corporate cock sucking town planners.

Paris- dirty and rude.

Beast of Burden
And Bristol fucking sucks. I hate Bristol more than Newport, but not as much as Aberdeen.

Bath is pleasant, but depressing in a way. I would be happy to live in Bath, mind you.

York is indeed a good looking city, but tainted by too much tourism and stag/hen nightmares

Durham is best seen by train (e.g. from the south, going to Newcastle). Only gets worse if you stop and walk round.

I really want to go to Chicago.

Oh, and NYC is a shoe in

All about pride and egos
I don't like cities unless they are huge, sprawling and miserable with a few strong upsides but mostly downsides to living there. The being miserable criterion is very important: the less local solidarity and camaraderie and the less generally helpful the citizenry, the better. The population of the city must thoroughly believe that, although they suffer comparatively extortionate rent prices, higher crime rates, much more pollution and noise, and a dramatically decreased quality of life than virtually any other smaller city or town nearby, this is a small price to pay for the benefit of take-out sushi, night-clubs where no one knows each other, and being able to work on subsistence wages for someone much richer than you.

Seriously, a city with overly positive people in it just doesn't make any sense at all. It ruins it. This is why I don't like Montreal and Vancouver and though I haven't been there I'm guessing Cleveland as well.

No-one's said Lisbon yet, as far as i can see, yet it gets rave reviews from lots of people. Will be there for Xmas, so hoping it's good....

Rotterdam - after coming from Am'dam, this place seemed so spacious, friendly and far from pretentious
Berlin - so much going on and yet so much space
Lisbon - does the faded grandeur thing really well and in summer is teaming with people out on the streets. A more boho version of Barcelona
London - when its good its great...it'll keep you well entertained if you make an effort but you need to 'work it'

you know how it is in the Bay, dude. you gotta stick with your side.

tbf there are a lot of great things about SF but I would never, ever want to live there. mainly cos it's insanely expensive, but also, this is the city that sent riot cops to arrest Food Not Bombs and has been engaged in a long-running war against its homeless population. dot-com yuppies. yuppies in general. a city where the main (only, really) black neighborhood is on a Superfund site. Willie Brown (admittedly, both a positive and a negative. but mostly negative). plus all the goddamn tourists and all the chintzy stuff that caters to them, Fishermen's Wharf & all that nonsense.

Oakland is the Black Panthers, Fruitvale, Don Nelson. the Oakland Black Cowboys association. Souls of Mischief, Del, Too Short. Lake Merritt & Lake Temescal. it's the city that passed a resolution calling for Ebonics to be recognized as its own language. it's also, relating to the original topic, the 2nd-most diverse city in the U.S. by the last census; Oakland is all about that Southeast Asian/Latin/black/white mix.

seriously, it's not even close. (in case it's not clear, this is all good-natured ribbing)

also, glad to see Chicago getting so much love.

it sucks, mostly because you are right... haha buuut i still got a soft spot for frisco

Have to admit that Edinburgh is a very interesting place to visit, even on multiple occassions, but I can't objectively bring myself to applaud what it stands for (apoligies to 4lh and everyone else I know who lives there).

What, boredom? I also struggle to applaud it.

Berlin is great. Haven't spent more than a couple of weeks anywhere else, so I can't really judge. Porto seemed nice, though apparently Lisbon is better.
