Stag Tag

What is it with all the gigantic stag beetles lately? I found one on its back in a bucket in our garden last Friday, legs whirring uselessley, which I gingerly rescued. It was about 2 inches long and kind of thin, not as bulky as the ones we saw last year.

That' fine, but someone I work with also saw one on its back in Streatham the same day, legs also whirring uselessly. This was a bigger, feistier specimen, it was able to grip onto his shoe.

And then this morning, I opened the back door to be greeted by another dead one, shrouded in cobwebs (shudder to think of what kind of spider it would take to do that) on the doorstep. Had to step over it to get to my bike. I hope it's gone by my return this evening but I also want to see what 2.75 year old son makes of it.

Is this evidence of Flantday-type emergence of stag beetles, or coincidence?
