Gil Scott-Heron R.I.P

My first memory of Gil Scott-Heron was "the first thing I wanna say is mandate my ass", such a powerful opening boom, yet the song itself is a brilliantly witty and subtle dissection of Reagan and the 'hero' complex in American politics (weird how the most powerful country on earth is the one we're consistently told "needs to feel good about itself").

Second time was when Channel 4 made (or maybe just screened) this in its early days, when it still had some sense of its remit. It's brilliant stuff, you should hunt around if you haven't seen it.

Friend of mine lived in NY in the early 00's and his boss picked up a pile of stuff in an auction somewhere. Turned out it was Gill's stuff which must have been repossessed or something.
The boss didn't have a clue who he was so my mate has been the owner of some reel tapes ever since. As far as we know none of it ever came out and the intention always to return them because they were probably sold for drug money or while he was in jail.

sad now.

:) :) :) - I didn't know that either. Made me chuckle this morning.

Love this. Found it while on a you tube trawl.
