Cleaning hardwood floors

in what is bound to be the least viewed/commented upon thread in recent memory...

any recommendations of best ways to clean wood floors? we recently decided to chuck out some rugs and now have lots of refinished floors to maintain. one complication: a cat who loves to stick her nose in everything and once got sick by licking up a small damp spot of floor cleaner. so, needs to be some sort of "safe" (all-natural?) liquid or spray cleaner. used mop-n-glo before we got the cats and it worked well but that's out of the question now.

have tried wet swiffer, works ok but not great. someone recommended some vinegar mixed in water but can't image the apartment would smell very good afterwards.

any thoughts?

thx.

We have wooden floors throughout the house and have done for the past 5 years and to be honest we just use a little bit of washing up liquid in lukewarm water and use a sponge mop on them once a fortnight. Modern varnish can cope with that and they won't need re varnishing until I am very old - the exception is the bathroom where we used a heavy duty boat deck varnish but even that looks sorry for itself now and is due a re-coat shortly.

cool, thanks. i've read people put a few drops of the liquid used to wash plates and dishes (is that what you refer to as "washing up liquid"?) in some warm water and it does a decent job, and probably diluted enough to be safe for the cats. also seems like frequent sweeping with broom is key to get the dirt particles that can get ground in and cause scratches.

also looked at some vacuum cleaners with special attachments for wood floors.
