but i don't get what you are suggesting this have to do with shrooms???
Oh that was to do with that thing Helen said about the fungus that makes ants' heads explode. Then I remembered this 'exploding head' thing which I have on occassion when I'm sleeping.

That ant story reminds me of this great, but only tangentially relevant fact about a parasite that likes to live in cats, but is more commonly found in rats. It fucks with the rats brain, taking away its instinctive fear of cats to ensure the rat is eaten by a cat, thus passing the parasite on to the cat.

See!

oh yeah if you spread a very thin layer of runny yoghurt on a dvd and leave it till it goes off , then play it you get these mad fractal dvd images, the fungus fucks with the digital information and manipulates the picture, same with cds it fucks with the info on that and bends the tracks.
can't play them on computers tho, but they wont fuck up yr other players.

Bring out the vacuum
Do you clean the yoghurt off, or is it so thin that by the time the fungus is active there's nothing that needs wiping?

I just have visions of off yoghurt dripping through cd / dvd players. :|

yeah that was my question too ....

The fractal effect sounds exciting - I quite like the weird effects you get from badly encoded divx movies too, strange artefacts, this viscous noise that spreads from frame to frame.

Oyster mushrooms are superb in creamy kinda sauce.

I'm a big fan of shiitake too.

Anyone know of any good recipes? Asking on this thread seems somehow sacrilegeous ...

Is it true that John Cage went on a game show in Italy - and won - answering questions on Fungi as his specialist subject? I thought so, but now i'm doubting it...

Yeah, that's completely true. He was a very knowledgeable mycologist.

care of that welsh nature blog sufi posted...

http://xo.typepad.com/blog/2004/06/formidable_fung.html

Formidable Fungus Is World's Largest Organism

What is probably the largest living organism on earth has been discovered in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon. A fungus living three feet underground is estimated to cover 2,200 acres. After testing samples from various locations, scientists say it is all one organism.

Officially known as Armillaria ostoyae, or the honey mushroom, the fungus is 3.5 miles across and takes up 1,665 football fields. The small mushrooms visible above ground are only the tip of the iceberg.

Experts estimate that the giant mushroom is at least 2,400 years old, but could be 7,200 years old.

I posted this a while back, but very relevant to the discussion of parasitism/behavior modification:
