Frankel (and horse racing in general)

So Frankel retired unbeaten yesterday and some people are saying that he's the greatest horse of all time. But they are also saying the same thing about Black Caviar and a few years back they were saying the same thing about The Sea The Stars and also Kauto Star or whatever it was. Is this a particularly great time for horse-racing or are the commentators just given to hyperbole more than in other sports? If Black Caviar and Frankel are so close (and race almost the same distance) couldn't they have raced against each other and sorted it out?
I dunno much about horse racing but I like these pointless best of all time kinda things. Also noticed that Frankel has been valued at about £100 milliion pounds so about the same as Ronaldo I guess.
