A Dummy's Guide To ____

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
I happened across the video for Kano's new song today on YouTube and it provoked me into briefly skimming his catalogue. This, in turn, has provoked me into starting this thread, in which poor ignorants such as myself will ask the forum to give them a run down of the best songs/albums/videos/live performance videos by the appointed artist. At least in theory.

So lets start with Kano - somebody out there must know his catalogue back to back, or at least well enough to give me a run-down of his best tunes. PLEEEEEEEASE.

Kano's a funny one. I've got a couple of NASTY sets where as soon as he jumps on the mic it's like oh shit, this guy is so much better than everyone else. He should have been massive. Easily as marketable as Dizzee etc. Never really happened for him though.

Remember when he was on that Sky celebrity football show?

I can see him being MORE marketable than Dizzee - quite a good looking guy and a really laid back and smooth style. Who could you compare him to from the US rap scene - Jay-Z, maybe? (Not counting the looks obv. lol)

OTOH I suppose Dizzee was such a shock for ppl outside grime, his voice was piercing and weird, and his production (on ''I Luv U'' at least) was much more off the wall. Personally I prefer Dizzee anyway so maybe its not just a matter of style. EDIT: Also was just thinking that Ghetto had basically the same flow as Kano but has more of a Rascal esque piercing voice. And I could be wrong but is this why a lot of ppl hate Ghetto? It's grating, perhaps, to have that flow done in that hysterical voice.

''Ghetto Kyote'' is good and ''Boys Love Girls'' too. Always thought ''Ps and Qs'' was great. Working my way through these.

EDIT: ''True G'' is wicked. ''Destruction/VIP'' is one of the greatest grime tunes ever surely? Really like the stuff he did with The Streets/Mitchell Brothers, so quintessentially British sounding and witty. Must admit I got pretty fatigued by Kano's flow quickly so maybe that's a little sign of why he didn't blow up. That flow is breathless and quietly relentless.

Don't really think Kano has any reason to be disappointed with his career as compared to Dizzee. Very well respected in grime, major part in Top Boy and the face of a recent Mercedes ad campaign (which I'm guessing paid very well). Less commercial chart success but judging by Dizzee's recent output I'd be surprised if he's actually proud of the chart music he made (although I'm sure he's proud of its success).

For P Money you should check out Hazzardous Sessions, Coins 2 Notes, OG Season Volume 1 and In Da Hood The Lost Tapes. Probably all on youtube.

Kano is a UK Rap artist who lived in Grime for his childhood.

Like, his production was always the worst for me, even as a teen I hated how he'd do terrible choruses ("Signs") or throw in unnecessary guitars and dive into these really pronounced and over-emphasized rap flows.

Also, he's not that bright or deep, I'm amazed when people think he's a GREAT lyricist, its more his constantly 'on charming' cheesy Britanic thing. When he does that 'tough guy' voice it reminds me of terrible Eminem records.

I honestly don't even like a good deal of Home Sweet Home because of his production choices, he was so much better in other people's production, but he modeled himself after Dizzee with the 'sweet-boy' extension. Personally I feel like its a mistake as he's not a Dizzee, and probably never could've been, he doesn't have that open a personality via his music and that definitely is what keeps people coming to Diz, Ghetto, Wiley, etc.

Really interesting how you can find those three on Spotify, a good chunk of their discog, but with Kano... its Home Sweet Home and that's it. That could be both the label or Kane's doing but either way, someone basically says "There's nothing else in the official discography worth reminding people about", which is pretty fucked.

On the subject of P Money, I like him, he's great, I'm not an expert, etc.
