suprised by how much i enjoyed this. actually loved it. i admit i felt slightly irritated by the contrarian/trolling intro matt wrote for it. reminded me of his attempt to downplay the significance of reggae to jungle, and boost the (in truth non existaent) contribution detroit techno had made, but i suppose that was the point of writing it, so fair play and the mix is brilliant, not one shit tune and the mixing itself is a lot better than in previous installments.

The sonic argument here is that, in real terms, in genres spawned and ideas conceived, New York was the true sonic innovator of the golden era of dance music (1984-96). New York gave us House (the epicentre moved from Chicago quite quickly), Rave (Beltram, Landlord), Trance (Revelation - first trance track IMHO), Ambient House (the likes of Sound Waves), Jazz House (Burrell), and Dub Techno - Dubstep, even! (Bobby Konders).

The Translations-mixtape by Visible Cloaks (much better than the album it came with). If you manage to find it, really worth the search.

Listening to an old favourite of mine at work

DJ Mastervibe @ Dreamscape 17 vs 18

This sort of jungle is perhaps on the 'tasteful' side for some peoples tastes but it makes me feel proper nostalgic for a period I was never around for. The gentle hardcore synths vs aggro drops is a real sweet spot for me. I guess what I'm really remembering is stuff like Baby D and the Prodigy from when I was too young and too provincial to actually go to raves. When the Helter Skelter/Dreamscape flyers made me imagine raves as some sort of magical otherworld. I don't think I was even aware of drugs in those days!

Some great footage of Jungle at its peak in 1996 in this video. More people had got the hang of the swaying and dipping Jungle dance by this point. I was 18 at the time and had been going to events at The Sanctuary for a little while already. This was when it was golden though. Two arenas (The Sanctuary and the converted roller skating rink Rollers next door). Alternating Happy Hardcore and Jungle DJs in both. Even though you would almost have two separate audiences leaving and entering depending on whether Jungle or HH was being played there was always cross pollination between the two types of raver due to the mixture of both styles in both rooms. A year later tech-step had started to come in and the vibe changed but in '96 the atmosphere at these events really was magical and otherworldly.
