government shutdowns are a bargaining chip which, luckily, don't get used very often. also luckily, no civil servants get fired, they get furloughed and receive their back pay when the government eventually reopens. this situation is slightly different from the one we were discussing about no one caring, though.

most Americans don't care about shutdowns unless they are affected personally. for example, one of the reasons this last shutdown backfired on trump was because the department of agriculture closed down, which meant large farmers in the midwest were unable to receive their federal farm subsidy checks, which meant they couldn't buy tons of seed and equipment, which meant they wouldn't be able to plant on time to get maximum yields or meet their own employee payrolls, etc. since those farmers tend to be conservatives based in conservative states, the conservative GOP reps and senators from those areas took a lot of heat from their angry constituents, and they in turn gave that heat to the White House. then trump folded.

so, some people cared, spoke up and got action. trump's mistake was taking a position (shutting down government ) that negatively affected a core part of his own base.

So - just announced, Manafort didn't quite get the recommended 24 years - he got 47 months. His lawyers argued that he was "unfairly targeted" - such a load of bollocks, they investigated him and found he'd committed countless crimes and then he made a deal and tried to cheat that. If you're guilty of crimes then you're fair game to be investigated (in fact even if you haven't) and arguing that you shouldn't have been investigated should in no way mitigate your sins. Fuck. What a joke.

One of many comments. People stealing one hundred dollars get tougher sentences. Also the judge saying "You have lived an otherwise blameless life" while he is awaiting sentencing from another court crosses the line from being a pisstake to an outright lie.

I will never feel bad/or forgive the D's for creating this divide. They completely manufactured “Trump is racist” all bc he kicked HRC’s ASS. Country should be a non stop all-American block party with 45 in office, instead we’re in civil war because of lies created by sore losers

Come on Wyatt, it’s not because they don’t like Trump. They are HIDING CRIMES. Why is it taking so long to get there?

Mueller submits Trump-Russia report, clamour grows for its quick release - https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-us...-idUKKCN1R32P3

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday handed in a confidential report on his investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election and any potential wrongdoing by U.S. President Donald Trump, setting off a clamour from lawmakers in both parties for the document’s quick release.

Marking the end of his nearly two-year investigation that ensnared former Trump aides and Russian intelligence officers and cast a cloud over the Republican businessman’s presidency, Mueller submitted the report to Attorney General William Barr, the Justice Department said.

It was not known if Mueller found criminal conduct by Trump or his campaign, beyond the charges already levelled against several aides. In all, Mueller brought charges against 34 people and three companies.

Mueller, a former FBI director, had been examining since May 2017 whether Trump’s campaign conspired with Moscow to try to influence the election and whether the Republican president later unlawfully tried to obstruct his investigation.
