No I'm serious. If millions of people die then Trump will fight tooth and nail to avoid an election cos he'll be really unpopular and seeing as he's already likely to face numerous criminal charges when he leaves power then a kind of reckless criminal negligence that led to US deaths on top of that should mean he'll spend the rest of his life in jail. Putin keeps extending his terms - I assume - cos he's made so many enemies he can't risk not having the power to squash them and I'm sure Trump would like to do the same. And if he delay one election then... well, it would look scarily like the thin edge of the wedge wouldn't it? Delay becomes cancel and so on...

Yeah I think you are right actually. If we go into wartime type command economies, the government lasts as long as it lasts. But the hope is that adversarial politics goes out the window, party lines dissolve so to speak

Yeah, Biden was filmed threatening to fight a member of the public the other week and nothing happened. There's been a shift.

ha...at this point, that's nothing! we're talking about a president who blatantly lies every day, went through multiple bankruptcies, slept with porn stars, caught on tape bragging about grabbing women by the pussy, etc.

Well this is the discussion in the other thread isn't it (as always all topics become one) but it could go either way... I tend to be pessimistic about these things and I don't see much sign of party lines disappearing at the moment, maybe the shock hasn't been big enough yet.

Did you see that yesterday the NY Times was advising Americans that the Trump updates were dangerous bullshit and they should get their info from Macron, Merkel and Trudeau instead... obviously true but pretty damming and sad really.

I dunno why they bother going to the briefings anymore. They should just contact government agencies directly. Just turn him off and work around him.

Just the sort of thing you'd expect from treasonous un-American LIE-beral media like the New York CRIMES. Sad!

But the thing is people believe him above their own experience. He said there would be four million tests available by the end of last week... people are saying that they can't get them but Trumpers are replying "He said they're there, you're obviously doing it wrong".

I keep seeing reports that his approval rating has gone up? Are these are accurate? How is this possible? If it's true then he's properly untouchable, he should go full Charles Taylor and borrow the infamous slogan he used when he stopped being a warlord and ran - successfully - for president in 1966 EDIT: sorry 1996 obviously

"He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him."

Still amazingly high all things considered... but that looks like an aggregate poll right? In the US I'm amazed at how they can find a poll saying whatever they like. As they say, polls are supposed to tell you what people do think but really they're being used as a tool to tell you how to think.

Anyway, Pence has now stated

The president wants me to make clear that fighting the virus will be “locally executed, state managed & federally supported.”
I read that as "Oh fuck me this is gonna be - and, worse, look - bad, let's let the governors deal with it and blame them afterwards"

The Trump re-election campaign told TV stations they could lose their operating licenses for airing an ad criticizing the president’s actions in the coronavirus crisis -- a challenge that may be more bluster than actual threat.
President Donald Trump’s campaign, in a letter on Wednesday, told stations in five battleground states to stop showing the ad from Priorities USA, a political action committee that supports Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
Failure to remove the ad “could put your station’s license in jeopardy” before the Federal Communications Commission, the campaign said in the letter. “Your station has an obligation to cease and desist from airing it immediately to comply with FCC licensing requirements.”
The ad consists of dated recordings of Trump's words talking abut the C19 plotted against a graph of the number of cases risings. There is absolutely no dispute that it's true so this is pretty frightening isn't it? Even if it is just an empty threat.
