Of course, I forgot that the Clintons are Democrats!

Er, I get the impression this thread has been sidetracked a bit. My original comment was not about why non-white voters generally vote Democrat, nor why they generally prefer Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump. I expect many of them would prefer a pint of warm piss to Donald Trump. I was talking about why - or so 'tis said - they generally voted for Clinton rather than Sanders in the Democrat candidate selection.

Some clues here: basically, Sanders has a voting history that's chequered from the POV of black Americans, and has been highly critical of Obama, whereas Bill's economic policies helped black earnings rise and black unemployment fall faster than for other demographics during the good times of the 90s and the earlier part of the last decade (even if his deregulation of Wall Street subsequently turned out to be one of the main ingredients in the 2008 meltdown) and Hillary enjoys the reflected goodwill from that. So not really that much of a mystery.

Of course, I forgot that the Clintons are Democrats!

https://www.quora.com/Has-the-situa...s-If-not-why-do-blacks-keep-voting-Democratic

There are two reasons why African Americans overwhelmingly vote for the Democratic Party:

First, the National Democratic Party has improved conditions for African Americans.

Second, starting with Richard Nixon in the 1960s, the Republican Party used the issue of race to attract Southern voters.

Whether it was integrating the military (http://www.trumanlibrary.org/ann...), the Supreme Court holding in Brown v Board of Education (8 of the 9 Justices in that unanimous holding were appointed by Democratic Presidents; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bro... , List of Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States),
the enactment of John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson's 1964 Civil Rights Act (recall that the GOP nominated one of the few Senators who voted against it for President that same year, Barry Goldwater),

the enactment of the Voting Rights Act (every Supreme Court Justice who voted to eviscerate this law was appointed by a Republican; http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/2..., down to the Affordable Care Act (which made it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against persons with sickle cell anemia as a preexisting condition; http://sicklecell-ourvoice.blogs...), the national Democratic Party has assiduously pursued and protected the interests of the African American community.

Today most Republicans argue that the best government is one that is both small and local. But history has shown it was the large central government which protected the rights of African Americans when local communities refused to register Black voters, integrate schools, or prosecute police for brutal practices against members of the African American community. True, many of those local politicians were Democrats, but it was the national government under Democrats AND Republicans which pursued justice. And now while Democrats continue to support the national government's role, Republicans prefer local control.

On issues such as raising the minimum wage, maintaining stem cell research funding, creating tuition-free community colleges, and repealing voter ID laws, the Democratic Party has taken stands that resonate in the African American community.

Most of the significant firsts for African Americans came under Presidents who were Democrats. The first Black General in the US Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben....), the first Black Cabinet member (http://www.history.com/this-day-...), the first Black Supreme Court Justice (http://www.biography.com/people/...), the first Black female on the federal bench (http://www.biography.com/people/...), the first Black Attorney General (http://www.biography.com/people/...) -- all of these occurred under Democratic Administrations.

The first President to speak before the NAACP was a Democrat (https://books.google.com/books?i...).

Consider the first Black congresswoman (http://www.biography.com/people/...),
the first Black female senator (http://www.biography.com/people/...),
and all three African Americans Governors who served since Reconstruction. They were all Democrats.

http://www.biography.com/people/...
http://www.biography.com/people/...
http://www.biography.com/people/...

And then there's Barack Obama.

But there's something else that shouldn't be forgotten. Starting with Richard Nixon in the 1960s, Republican leaders used race to attract Southern white votes. This is not my claim. Nor is it the claim of some Democratic partisan. Two former national chairmen of the Republican Party acknowledge that their party used a "Southern Strategy" to attract racist white votes, and it worked.

RNC Chief to Say It Was 'Wrong' to Exploit Racial Conflict for Votes
Michael Steele: For Decades GOP Pursued 'Southern Strategy' That Alienated Minorities

African Americans have seen their rights preserved and expanded under Democratic Presidencies. And so in every Presidential election since Kennedy-Nixon, African Americans have preferred the Democratic Presidential candidate over the Republican opponent.

In these ahistoric times however I'd like to remind you of the fact that well up into the 1960s and 1970s the "Southern Democrats" were a very strong faction of the Democratic party, and at times overwhelmingly so. Very often, influential members of the "Southern Democrats" were supporters of racial segregation. The US south used to be a stronghold of the Democratic party for over a century. After all, don't forget it was the Republican party/Abraham Lincoln advocating the abolishment of slavery (of course due to a lot of reasons, and the equality of "races" only played a very small role in this).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Democrats

However this phenomenon is indeed historical today - the US south in terms of politics has almost exclusively been Republican now for several decades.

Prime example Governor of alabama George Wallace, third runner for the presidential election in 1968. Was opposing the civil rights act, was gov. as a Democratic party member, ran as an independent in the 1968 presidential race.

Putin is a badass. Our President is a pussy. That's why more Americans are fond of Trump and Putin. It would be great to work with the Russians. They don't put up with shit, and nor should we.

Good article this:

That such a small man would have such an awesome impact on our nation's history is terrible, but it makes sense if you believe in the essential ridiculousness of the human experience. Trump picked exactly the wrong time to launch his mirror-gazing rampage to nowhere. He ran at a time when Americans on both sides of the aisle were experiencing a deep sense of betrayal by the political class, anger that was finally ready to express itself at the ballot box.

i keep thinking a smart outsider candidate who was a knowledgable, decent person would have kicked everyone's asses this year, but then also wonder if, at the end of the day, americans would actually have the balls to elect a true outsider. having trump as a candidate is truly a lost opportunity in a "change" election cycle, he's not the right outsider for the job.

btw, this new bloomberg poll has hillary up 9 points nationally and pulling away in most every demographic group, even now among men and non-college degree voters.

After trailing among men throughout the summer, Clinton is now winning 46 percent of their support in a hypothetical two-way race, compared to 44 percent for Trump. She’s ahead among women by 17 points and has a 1-point edge among white women, 46 percent to 45 percent.

In the overall two-way contest, Clinton leads 50 percent to 41 percent, the same margin as when third-party candidates are included.

Among those with no college degree, her edge is 48 percent to 44 percent, erasing Trump’s 8-point advantage in September. Among whites with college degrees—a longtime Republican stronghold—she expanded her lead to 13 points.

Yeah, good stuff there, although I found the bits about Clinton more illuminating than those about Trump.

Also, this:

Keeping up with Trump revelations is exhausting. By late October, he'll be caught whacking it outside a nunnery. There are not many places left for this thing to go that don't involve kids or cannibalism.

is surely rendered moot by the fact that, of the various women who've accused him or rape or other sexual assaults, one was 13 years old at the time?

THE IMPORTANT thing is not WHO hacked the Clintons, her aides, and the DNC, IT'S WHAT'S IN THOSE EMAILS and Trump pointed out Bernie's and Podesta's about Hillary, so that's talking behind her back. They also revealed how Hillary and the DNC conspired to steal the election from Bernie. NOW THAT'S RIGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More damaging leaks to come, and if it is the Russians, and her pestering Putin, then the more Putin will put out more and even the Game Changer which will be soon.

WHOOPER of the Night: "Ninety percent of the monies... ."

THE ELECTION IS RIGGED since the FBI, the DOJ, and the White House CONSPIRED with Hillary and Bill to let her off for exactly what a "FOUR-STAR GENERAL" is guilty of, and "might spend five years in jail FOR ONE EMAIL!"

"THE TAPES" ARE VERITAS/James O'Keefe that Trump mentioned where Hillary, and surrogates, were paying for riots, AND VOTER FRAUD! RIGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can you accept an election result where there are advertised undercover Veritas tapes ON HOW TO COMMIT FRAUD "THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING FOR FIFTY YEARS!" "BUSSING PEOPLE IN!"

PERFECT on the use of Latinos and Blacks every four years.

PERFECT on the Legal Immigrants "who have been in lines for years" against those who came here illegally that she supports. Hillary with her tears for the young girl whose parents are illegals. TOUGH! Send the parents back. ARE WE A NATION OF LAWS OR NOT? They can get here legally, raise their right hand, and then have tears of joy and I'll shed tears with them!

PERFECT on mentioning the FOUR FAMILY MEMBERS whose children were killed by ILLEGALS.

FORGOT PATRICIA SMITH, the Benghazi mother who Hillary lied to her face. VERY BIG OMISSION.

How do you defend Obamacare since that's like sugarcoating a lemon but Hillary still defended it with Trump saying he's glad some of it is hitting the American people BEFORE the election and he'll repeal it.

ACTING TOUGH ON PUTIN? LOL! Trump is right that we are not respected anymore especially with Hillary saying we will not send troops to KEEP MOSUL after it is retaken and that we should have left forces there in the first place. ISIS WAS BORN FROM OBAMA'S AND HILLARY'S RETREAT!

NO FLY ZONE in Syria? Putin is laughing since he's posturing that he's willing to have a war with the US over Syria. "I want all Russian citizens to come home. We need you here!" He can make threats BECAUSE HE CAN since he know Obama, and Hillary, WON'T RISK WAR, which then signals weakness. IF WE SENT A HUNDRED JETS OVER SYRIA, WHAT WOULD PUTIN DO??? NOTHING! WE CALLED HIS BLUFF!

SO WHAT if Trump was on The Apprentice while she was going after Osama! Very petty. Too bad he didn't say that many of the bad events of the world were taking place while Obama was playing golf! But then again, I was eating sopapillas at Los Cuates during the raid on Osama. MY BAD!

WHY ARE WE STILL PROTECTING GERMANY, Japan, South Korea, a maybe with NK nutcase, and why aren't they paying their fair share?

CONSTITUTION? If Hillary gets to pick the Justices, they will eventually be over-run by the Mob Squad who now want to end Columbus Day, then Thankgiving, "INVADERS AND KILLERS!" Then it will be Christmas and the banning of our government acknowledging religious holidays, including Easter. Fourth of July, saying the Pledge, and the National Anthem, are forced indoctrination.

THEY WILL BAN THE CONSTITUTION: "WRITTEN BY A BUNCH OF WHITE MALE RACISTS!" COUNT ON IT! They banned the Confederate Flag for a loony kid shooting up a Black church and who had a photo with the flag in it. Now they're tearing down monuments with any and every Confederate leader. Removing names of buildings too! THEY WILL BAN THE CONSTITUTION!

THIS IS SERIOUS!

EXCELLENT ANALYSIS and better than what I've heard or read. They will ban the Constitution if we don't stand up now. He did rightly mentioned that Hillary being the candidate is rigged but the media got it wrong again.

Hillary's dream is to ban the Constitution.
Only stupid libs don't understand that.
First she'll suspend one amendment then another, then another and then before you know it, the ENTIRE CONSTITUTION WILL BE GONE This is Hillary's dream.
1 ST AMENDMENT REPEALED
2 ND AMEDMENT REPEALED
AND RIGHT DOWN THE LINE
AS PRESDIENT, SHE WILL DO THAT!!

You get such a clear view of what people are like through the window of the internet, and it's a horrible sight. No wonder The Walking Dead is so popular.

It would be nice, in fact, if half these people turned into rampaging flesh-eating zombies so we could guitlessly mow them down with guns. Ahhh sweet reverie!

EDIT: I am ashamed of this psot, even though it was facetious.

Agreed here. I don't like (anti)social media in general, but it's a great tool to get an idea what people are REALLY thinking. The funny thing is (funny in a rather twisted way I might add) I always considered myself as a misanthrope, but what people have been posting since the floodgates of broadband/smartphone use have been opened is breathtaking. There is a great number of purely negative sadsacks around.

Anti-Intellectualism and the "Dumbing Down" of America

There is a growing and disturbing trend of anti-intellectual elitism in American culture. It’s the dismissal of science, the arts, and humanities and their replacement by entertainment, self-righteousness, ignorance, and deliberate gullibility...

There has been a long tradition of anti-intellectualism in America, unlike most other Western countries. Richard Hofstadter, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his book, Anti-Intellectualism In American Life, describes how the vast underlying foundations of anti-elite, anti-reason and anti-science have been infused into America’s political and social fabric. Famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once said: "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

A bit more general notes - At first, I considered Trump to be a megalomaniac clown, full of himself. which he probably is.

But now I consider him to be a real danger in so far that in his wake democracy in itself is being massively undermined. Done so by right wing extremists who are way worse than the average Republican supporter. The ideology of the Alt Right is now in the mainstream of American politics, and that is downright scary. Publicly anouncing he will not accept the outcome of the vote (of course only if he loses, bc if a right winger loses in a public election, it must be fraudulent, ey!) and myriads of other examples showing he and his supporters despise the political system. "Oldschool"-republicans never fundamentally questioned the politicalsystem in itself, they rather were using it. The Alt Right and the Trumpians want a proto-fascist state.

We have a similar tendency in the UK, although it's not generally associated with the right.

In case none of you noticed, Hillary wore red for the first debate, blue for the second one, and white for the third one - our country's national colors. She also wore white last night in honor of the women's suffrage movement (it was the color used to represent it during that time), which gave women the right to vote.

thats too deep. if anyone thinks hilary can lose with that level of attention to detail youre a mentalist

Trump has undermined democracy, but he's more the symptom than the cause. People don't trust politicians anymore. And given the levels of inequality, why should they?

Of course with Trump the key factor might be race. The optimistic view would be that Trump represents the last panicked convulsions of white supremacy.

I mean, does populism HAVE to have a face like the Donald's?
