But yeah it is weird with Libby - I just remember that sometimes in passing they would say "Libby who wrote an erotic book about children having sex with animals" and I'd be - wait a minute, what? How come this isn't a bigger deal? Why aren't people more up in arms about this? Particularly the moralists in the same party as him.

This is what a lot of the less subtle and thoughtful commentators on the left (and some on the right) completely failed to grasp when Trump did his burger extravaganza for the kids' football team or whatever it was. To those with a deep understanding of global culture and politics it was obvious that Trump was referring to the eternal burger battle and that this gesture was a carefully planned and calibrated blow against those Stalinistas in Russia and the US who would love to see the flower of American youth forced to eat the symbolic defeat contained in vegetables and other cuck-foods. Of course the callow and ignorant voices of the press missed this en masse and hilariously lined up to demonstrate their ignorance while claiming that somehow Trump was 'lacking in sophistication'. Fools.

So seems that Trump's tariffs have not closed the trade deficit as he claimed. In fact it's the widest it's been for ten years or something. Now I dunno if that's always a bad thing but Trump has made it part of his stated policy aim to decrease it and so the fact he's achieved the complete opposite ought to, ought to mean something to someone - but who the fuck am I kidding? It obviously won't make the slightest bit of difference. There was also a survey out today which showed that the overwhelming majority of Americans think that Trump committed criminal acts before being president and a small majority think he has done so since becoming president - in other words most Americans think their president is a criminal and there is a discrepancy between this and his polling which suggests that at least some think he's a criminal and still want him in power. Nothing in the world can lower his ratings below a certain floor. Nothing.

The same happened in Italy: scandal after scandal Berlusconi would get re-elected as if nothing happened. Unfortunately, the soution for getting rid of him brought not better but worse.

trump's strategy has worked perfectly: overwhelm people with so much outrageousness and chaos that they eventually become numb to the actual corruption, failures, abuses of power and lies.

last week emerged evidence of a signed check to silence a porn star with whom he had an affair -- signed while he was in office as president! -- and it barely registers with anyone. moral bankruptcy? a campaign finance violation? ahhhh, who cares. just another day in trump world. he still has an 80%+ approval rating among republican voters.

the current damage is bad, the lasting damage to the institutions of the country is worse.

See, I hadn't even heard that, and you're right - my reaction is pretty much "Huh, figures".

Imagine that happening while Clinton was in office. You'd have Republicans baying for his blood and probably most Democrats washing their hands of him, would be my guess.

Also I guess you've all seen this story going round about how Trump panicked after he'd slated Obama's academic record and sent his enforcer (Cohen I think) round all his old schools ordering them to bury all his grades.

It's somehow a fascinating thing to watch in all it's morbidity. That the "leading power" of the West has chosen a figure like Trump as its president makes it obvious: The West is on it's last legs. However, as I have written already elsewhere, despite the fact that some Westeners themselves will be delighted with the prospect of a fallen "West", whatever follows will be way more crappy.

Yeah, I reckon the shade of Spengler is having a good chuckle watching this ongoing shit-show, and Brexit too, and muttering "Ha, TOLD you!"
