O Hark! The cry of consumer somnolence, patron of the drive-thru and the ready meal, a thrice bellied, corpulent receptacle, chewing on gristle and spleen and elbow and snout, posturing as gourmand as he rummages through the bin bags and foil trays of memory to emerge with yellow pack labels and burger wrappers.

The men of the wild know their quarry in all its moods and tempers. Axe in hand, they hike and track and stalk and hunt and trap and snare and stab and slash and spear and net. Intimate with each drop of blood, each organ, each sinew, tendon, tooth and claw they alone divine the true soul of the beast.

yeah that's a great breakout. pretty much all proper jungle - very little of what i'd call exploitation tracks (nuttah, incredible, renk, jet star etc) y'see the ragga jungle you have in there (red light [suad], blackstar [rebel mc], tom and jerry [4hero]) - that's all proper stuff from within the nuum.

quite a logistical challenge to make my own list tbh - i've (psychologically at least) packed my nuum twelves away after making that london's dreaming mix. here is the 93-96 section of that for the record BUT it doesn't really include the really big tunes that were my favourites at the time like doc scott's "last action hero" and "drumz", foul play's "murder most foul", dj crystl's "warpdrive", roni size's "warning" and "timestretch", ray keith's "terrorist", deep blue's "the helicopter tune", goldie's "jah", pure's "anything test",, deep blue's "angels in dub" etc - all these and many more being tracks i bought off the wall at black market and section 5.

and then there's the tracks from my old "brick door" mix!!!!

so much astonishing music :)

yeah that's a great breakout. pretty much all proper jungle - very little of what i'd call exploitation tracks (nuttah, incredible, renk, jet star etc)

but M Beat were amazing though! Style, sweet love, rough like me, free. Pop jungle maybe but I dont think the beats are watered down.

never realised there was a video for this. Did it actually bother the charts?

I'm an m beat fan but a)a lot of it is '92 and b)even the stuff that falls within the timeframe seems somehow removed from jungle proper for some reason

don't see why really (apart from all the kerfuffle over general levy/incredible) but nevermind.

Brock out crew-hardcore romance

this is an amazing tune i'd never heard before off your list thats definitely going on mine. nice one

Coincidentally Incredible and Sweet Love both got played in the rave I was at and there's absolutely nothing not classic about those tunes IMO Even if General Levy was a cock.

OriginalNuttah too. Maybe I don't see these tunes the same as you guys cos they were what alerted me to jungle in the first place. But as bait as they are they are anthems, and anthems are essential.

i think luka's list covers most of what i'd choose, but I will definitely campaign for the following works of genius that haven't been mentioned yet.

Urban Jungle -Back in the Daze (Sexy Ladys Mix)

Lloydie Crucial Ribbon In The Sky

SE9 Crew - So Sweet

88.3 Featuring Lisa May Wishing On A Star

i'm quite tempted to chuck in a couple of the more happy hardcore flavoured ones from slipmat, red alert & mike slammer, orca, kniteforce etc too.

woebot top 40 jungle and hardore

ok - that wasn't too hard - here's my list of my essential 92-96 tracks. it kinda reflects how the twelve inches are filed in my collection which is in two sections: "hardcore" and "jungle"

before some twit starts to berate me on the absence of any particular tune i should point out that this is a *personal* selection specific to my tastes and interests.

i cant be bothered to go into my opinions on what i described as "the pernicious effect" of reggae on jungle suffice to say i 100% stand my original comments and would kindly request that people who disagree with me closely parse what i actually said. to treat roots like funk - which is what the great, untouchable tunes of 94 did is not to make the music any more reggae-like. you only have to look at the idiocy that engulfed the congo natty label (irie!!!) to understand what i mean - as they took the reggae mantle more and more seriously. and to anyone who thinks there was a stronger connection between jungle and reggae LISTEN to the dancehall rhythms (not the MCs) of the day which were entirely ignored.

Finnegans wake is a synchronicity machine. I read Woebots post then picked up my book and the first sentence reads
"you is feeling like you was lost in the bush, boy? You says: it is a puling sample jungle of woods. You most shouts out"

Simon Reynolds has floated the idea of doing a 1991-93 hardcore poll.

I personally would like to have an "early-90's nuum poll", which would cover hardcore and bleep, as well as proto-hardcore, Kickin Records, SUAD, ragga techno, etc.

My plan would be to launch it on monday with the deadline being in six weeks time. Or do you lot want to have break from dissensus polls for a bit?

Anyone interested?

10 confirmations and I'll do it.

I like the idea, but I am even more clueless re: hardcore than I am jungle. That doesn't matter though cos I didn't take part in the last one either.
