shura.

make it up sounds like haim doing some sort of song youd hear during a montage in an 80s rom com about a girl in the big city.

everything of hers ive heard sounds like stuff my uncle would listen to in 1985.

abra is also basically just renovating NY 1980s club classics

i love all this stuff and want to hear it playing at visage in gants hill

Yeah, I felt like Especia fell off after "Midnight Confusion" but that Wonder Girls tune is def. a good one.

Nobody's mentioned The 1975 yet, and those guys REALLY nailed pastiche pop in the last few years.

Falling is the definitive Haim song for me. Can listen to that any number of times.

haim are one of those things where i fall in love with the artists, like daydream about being famous and meeting one of them at a party and stuff and then we start kissing and stuff, regardless of their appearance and how long their legs are, just the yearning quality embodied in the songs, i get a teenage mooning feeling, i love that feeling its so nostaligic.

theres a brash quality to the especia vocal that i think really nails something about a certain brand of female 80s pop.

what we're talking about here, and what reynolds is talking about in retromania, is really classic postmodernism, that postmodernism is still working itself out, and only now is finding its peak, more ubiquitous than ever.

i think the thing about pastiche is that it is a question of close observation from the outside. a very close observation of external features. it doesn't get inside the form it aims to replicate. it think that's why it falls into the uncanny valley. it is like a android mimicking emotion. i think that is the aspect which felt so modern to me when i started this thread.

or rather what you are missing is having grown up when the records being pastiched were part of the larger cultural landscape. they rely completely on evoking those memories, on pulling at a thread which is connected to childhood and puberty and etc the whole proustian nexus

for newcomers to the forum we are all united in considering String's 'The Police' to be the greatest of the 'post-punk' bands. there are those of us who go further and say they were the only post-punk band of any merit. this is an article of faith for us here at dissensus and we brook no dissent. it's one of our few rules i guess you could say. 443665.jpg
