'The man behind the Roland drum machine and synthesiser range used across the spectrum of popular music since the mid-70s – from Prince to New Order, from Dr Dre to Kraftwerk – has died.

Ikutaro Kakehashi founded the Roland Corporation in 1972 and went on to develop one of the most well-known drum machines in pop music – the TR-808. His death at 87 was revealed by a former colleague on Facebook.'

Seems like an appropriate time to pay tribute to the 808. Post favourite tunes, observations, etc.

Loose Ends - Hanging On A String (1984)

Here's a trailer for a documentary on the 808 that I've not seen:

Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing (1982)

The first hit record to use the 808, apparently.

T La Rock & Jazzy Jay - It's Yours (1984)

Later paid tribute to by Loefah, of course.

“I bridged the gap between #HIPHOP & #EDM BACK IN 2012 now look,” Waka posted on Twitter. Followed by, “I found a new 🌊 electronic dance music, then found a way to bridge things together #nowLook…I started the 808 🌊.. not to be padded on my back but to bring in a whole new style of entertainment. FrFr.”

He added, “B4 Flockaveli name one cd that was abusing 808s… ask my younger brothers @sizzle808MAFIA @MetroBoomin.”

Luger seemed to take exception to Waka’s claims, responding, “smh I started that shit waka don’t do that. B4 me is was jeezy n shawty redd. T.I and dj toomp.”

Clearly befuddled with WFF’s boasts he added, “@WakaFlocka bra u don’t make beats how u start the ‘808 wave’ ? Hit my phone g. I’m confused.”

EVOL have just done a tape mixing 364 808 tunes. Anyone able to ID the first tune, 1:34 and 1:56 in the preview?
