Acid attacks

So fucked up - another summer, and this shit starts up again (not that it ever stopped, but there seems to be a big spike in attacks in hot weather)...

"... the summer too hot, you can feel it in the street."

This made for sobering reading the other day, probably one of the roughest things I've heard in a while - The father of a three-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm after a suspected acid attack on his son.

These are getting in the news again. Someone sprayed a woman and a couple of kids with something last night. And a bloke had some chucked in his face through a car window a few weeks back.

Had to turn the news off in work earlier when it started coming through (not the acid, rather images of its effects in the mind’s eye)

You’ve got to be seriously mentally ill or with a pathology off the charts to maim someone such a way

Burns make me squeamish

Cases which haunt me are one client who got splashed in an industrial accident and subsequently went to town on fentanyl patches. Every Friday, among the toughest session of the darkest of all life maps. You learn to keep eye contact, shake hands without overdoing, talk to the eyes as much ears because scar tissue meant his posture was affected too (where/when exhibiting tension?)

You could be on the bus and get melted by a car impacting into a fireball but targeting someone such a way? As grim as murder imho because for many of us there are actual fates worse than death

My mum worked on a children's burns unit as a nurse in the 80s and it sounded similarly tough.

a flame react could’ve been misconstrued/seen as tactless

insane work, palliative care too, relentless search for tiny improvements when ‘recovery’ might not be an option, neuropathic pain, contractures, you lose count of the immediate list of complications

Is there any indication whether these are targeted attacks or just Clockwork Orange type recreational depravity?

Didn't realise they were this frequent. Alarming figures;

Data from police forces across England and Wales showed there were 710 acid attacks recorded in 2022, compared with 421 in 2021, according to Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI).

The charity warned the real figure is likely to be "far higher" as a number of "key police forces", including Police Scotland and Thames Valley Police, did not respond to its Freedom of Information (FOI) requests for the data.

The bloke in the car seems to have been random, the woman in Clapham had been in a relationship with the attacker. There are CCTV images of him circulating with half his faced melted off, looking like The Terminator or something.
