it would be interesting to know how hard Shakespeare found writing

was it just flowing out of him or was the original speech something like

'to be or not to be? sod knows, not me'

i know for a fact he found it easy. he was better than me even. course he fucking found it easy

but Yeats reworked his poetry constantly, laboriously, to arrive at the finish line

The fascination of what's difficult
Has dried the sap out of my veins, and rent
Spontaneous joy and natural content
Out of my heart. There's something ails our colt
That must, as if it had not holy blood
Nor on Olympus leaped from cloud to cloud,
Shiver under the lash, strain, sweat and jolt
As though it dragged road metal. My curse on plays
That have to be set up in fifty ways,
On the day's war with every knave and dolt,
Theatre business, management of men.
I swear before the dawn comes round again
I'll find the stable and pull out the bolt.

it took me a long time to realise that you're fundamentally a romantic - so it shouldn't surprise me that you think of artistic creation in this way

of course there's definitely a danger of over-polishing, over-refining, over-thinking things

but however hard Shakespeare found it writing his plays he had to put a lot of work into learning rhetorical figures etc. at school

i know this because i talk to him in seances

on the other hand you're right in that if you're not automatically painting or making music or whatever you're not cut out for it

a lot of artistic creation comes down to flinging a lot of shit at a wall

I was really good at drawing at school

And I didn't really try now that you mention it

I must have practiced a lot to get good but the practice was never arduous

My whole life has been a lie

You're right to remind me to get my old art exercise books out of the attic when I next visit home

I think art would have actually gone somewhere for me if i'd been properly tutored... I could have been the next Tracy Emin

it actually doesnt go away that talent. ive seen my friend do classes once a week for three weeks
recently and the improvement is diabolical. actually scary. because the talent was in place.
if i did it i would barely improve.

you can set yourself difficult problems. and you might have trouble working it out.
that's what yeats was up to. doesnt have to be strictly formal. it can be a quite intricate
arrangement of sounds that doesnt cohere into a stable form per se.

for example, if you try and sing never too much you'll see how tricksy the phrasing is
