i never need to hear respect ever again TBH. i think in this country, she is only known for her late 60s stuff, and a very small period at that.

i knew you were waiting for me with george michael is great.
a rose is still a rose with lauryn hill is one of the best late period things she did.

My odd conflicting feelings on Aretha are while when I hear her I can't argue with the Soul-ness of her voice and singing I have never really loved her. Like a lot of songs but I have no real connection to her, not like I do with Stevie Wonder or Marvin gaye. But that's prob just cos she's one of these voices who rarely let's her guard down even though she can ofc be very tender and soft when she wants to. She had an amazing range though. I don't necessarily mean octaves but just how she could do say a little prayer and then do chain of fools or rock steady.
