    The shehnai is a musical instrument, common in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is made out of wood, with a double reed at one end and a metal or wooden flared bell at the other end.[1][2][3] Its sound is thought to create and maintain a sense of auspiciousness and sanctity and, as a result, is widely used during marriages, processions and in temples although it is also played in concerts. The shehnai is similar to South India's nadaswaram.

    there seems to be (and im generalising, and probably on shaky territory) a soundworld that extends fromthe edges of eastern europe through central asia all the way to india... and in fact into north africa too. in terms of the sounds of sounds and in terms of structures. a lot of the percussion and the wind instruments and so on. a whole range of sound that is charecteristic (and very beautiful)

    look up just intonation and microtones if u haven't already. but yes what you say is correct.

    well im not sure how else to explain it? non-western European music privileges rhythmic and melodic complexity over harmony and counterpoint, often in western music whilst you'll have multiple polyphonic lines or melodies running against each other in eastern musics the idea is to improvise with a certain set of melodic rules. coltrane was onto something when he tried to connect jazz with Indian classical. this is also why it's harder to do percussive complexity in western music cos there are too many non-percussive elements in the mix. in fact when i was talking about jungle being more multicultural this is what i meant, not asian dub foundation or bill laswell. the techstep sound could have gone in this kinda direction scrapes of atonal synth noise over 16 beat choppage. in fact that's the thing about drumfunk the downbeats neither land on the 1s and 3s or the beats aren't divided into 2s. so really it just ends up regressing back to an american funk rhythm.

    in some senses you could see this as just a more complex dancehall rhythm.

    there is also a soulfulness that predates the soul genre in these sounds but if you listen carefully there is also a dissonan tang that american music doesn't really get at.

    my favourite instrument is the kanun atm. quite metallic.



    Shame its impossible to find a nearly flawless kanun album to recommend. they all seem to have gimmics.
