oh yeh but they declare their politics on twitter. that's the thing. hardly anyone actually reads their shitty website. and i'm not gonna go on twitter to just satisfy AB's ego.

i honestly don't care. they aren't a proletarian vanguard in any sense, even in the non-leninist sense.

But I'll retract my pro-assad statement for now.

I probably need to clarify here that I wasn't stating that I personally view them as a leninist/marxist/communist/socialist/whatever vanguard, but rather that their personality traits (as well as the overall aesthetic and tone that the Novara brand takes) suggests that they possibly view themselves (however deludedly) as a kind of vanguard in waiting.

Although John's more likely closer to the truth in arguing that their behaviour is determined mostly by their careerism.

Either way, they are incredibly annoying - I can't imagine what it must be like following all of their various accounts on twitter and having your thought process pummelled day after day with all their crap.

Actually one of them used to come on our show on Resonance at that period, and we played alot of grime etc so you're kinda wrong there, dunno about the Ash guy though.

I went on the website and (skim) read one of the first articles on Syria, pleasantly surprised to see it quoting Lelia Al-Shami (but still having a bit of time for Craig Murray? ) so better than I'd hoped....

But yes, perhaps no one reads the website and the piece wasn't by one of the big dogs anyway. I can't imagine someone with one eye on a big media profile upsetting the Left applecart and taking an unpopular position. I found this exchange which is perhaps indicative: https://twitter.com/AaronBastani/sta...08724632317952

Reading this guy's Twitter is weirdly fascinating. I guess it's the populist brand-building that people find so repellent even if you agree to some degree with the politics?

I find the emotional undertones of it really weird as well - anger and contempt are never fun to read even if justified, but it strikes an odd note when associated with brand building (I was wondering if he was an Oxbridge grad as I read, but nope! UCL). There's a kind of glib hipness to it that turns me right off.

I read somewhere on their site something like: "Donate to help us take on the Establishment!" What will it be like if there's a Corbyn government? Who will be the Oppositional-Oedipal Daddy Figure then?

The centrists and Blairites, whose fault it will be when the Corbyn project fails to achieve socialism. Oh and the mainstream media, always them.

I think Aaron has modelled himself on a US shock jock type of thing.

Watching the interview at the beginning of the thread has reminded what a terrible, terrible cunt Piers Morgan is though. So I'm grateful to them for that if nothing else.

Interesting to think about Oz vs Bastai - see the Twitter I linked to upthread. I know Oz has recently got a job as Producer and News Editor for Sky. Perhaps there's something about having an economic foothold in "old media" that keeps you off this clicks for pay leftwing shockjock roundabout, that being the business model of BOTB shit like the Canary.

Yes exactly. You can see Owen Jones as straddling both these models. He did well getting his first book out when he did - I think if he'd been published later he would be more reliant on social media than he is.

Whereas Laurie Penny followed shortly after Owen and now seems largely dependent on crowd funding through Patreon - the new model.

Interesting to think about in light of what was talked about upthread, Jones having to demonstrate his ideological purity etc, having being a Corbyn apostate and still working for the filthy right wing press in the form of The Guardian. Seems like there's a weird slippage going on between income/celebrity/personal brand/political positions. Can you have personal positions that are different from your brand anymore? Or is it all subservient to clicks and likes? Gets stranger and stranger the more you think about it.
